Does anyone know the correct dosage of Ibuprofen when used for inflammation. I am using 1600mg a day...does this seem correct. Also, has anyone had any success with the ibuprofen cream...thanks

I think that is quite a lot of ibprofen and may give you stomach problems. I would start with 400 mgs. a day and slowly increase until you feel comfortable but 800 mg. is quite a bit for something you have to take continually. I have had some success with the creme, find it soothing.

That is strange. When I was on the ibuprofen route in attempt to cure, I was on 4000mg a day 800mg at a time. I went to look for ibuprofen cream to help cut down on the having to take medicine, couldn't find it. Now am taking currently indomethacin 50mg twice a day and elavil 25mg at night. Doesn't work but makes me sleepy.

I'm trying to guess here if you're talking about a TOTAL of 1600 mgs a day - which is a dose of one 400 tab four times a day (a 400 is the same thing as 2 Motrin, Advil, etc.) If it is, that's somewhat minimal. I actually can't handle more than 3 400's a day because I have a wimpy tummy. However, my Pod tried to get me to take 3 800's a day! Some of my friends actually do - I can't imagine that. So, if you're used to taking, say, 2 Advil for a headache or whatever, that gives you an idea of how much a single 400 mg. tablet is.

You won't be able to find the ibuprofen cream at a store - it's not available in the US. It's from Germany. You can order it here, via Scott's site on his 'products' page. I've been using it for a few months - I can't tell for sure if it's helping but it's nice to massage with.

Hi Barb,
I consider my pharmacist MUCH more important to my health than any doctor. I stick with one place that knows me and will take the time to answer my questions and give intelligent responses.....so, anytime I have to take an "over the counter" version of some prescription drug and the OTC dosage isn't helping (as IBP didn't for me) I ask them what the safe maximum dose is per day. A pharmacist can tell you what the safe dosage is and will also warn you about the risks associated with long term use of IBP.My story: at my PF worst the absolute max dose didn't touch the pain at all....after a religious period of stretching, icing and massaging and as much rest as I could afford I now find that a single dose of IBP will take away the pain at the end of the day. BUT you might want to check out (do a search of the board) the success others are having with bromelain (I'm not sure that is the right spelling) posters like RobinB, for instance.

If your insurance will pay for it, I would get the doctor to give newer generation anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen, even under the best of cirmcustances, is hard on the stomach. I take Vioxx. There are others like Lodine (now available in generic) and something that starts with a "C." (There are so many drugs with a "C" that all sound the same, I hestitate to guess the correct name, but I know it is usually given for arthritis.)Beverly

CELEBREX is the drug you are thinking of. I took it for 6 weeks and didn't help one bit. Tried vioxx and it helped immediately. They are actually the same basic drug but competitors.

I believe 2400 mg. is about max too. It is hard on some stomach's but it was fine for me. Try some newer ones though. I also am taking vioxx and it has helped more than anything else.
Thank you all for input

Thanks to everyone for their comments. To clarify things. I take 2 800mg(each) ibuprofen per day. I also take bromelain. I've been taking the ibuprofen for 3 days now and I can feel a difference in the swelling inside (that's right inside) my right foot that was operated on (PF/spur removal) Feb 2, 2000. Not much improvement in my left foot that was operated on April 3, 2000. I happened to have the ibuprofen on hand, but will ask the doctor tomorrow for a perscription for vioxx. I have taken Lodine and Celebrex with no luck. Thanks again, everyone has been helpful. Hope we all find the cure soon.

Hi Barb,At the last visit with my family doctor, I asked about Ibuprofin dosage. He said that to get the FDA to approve it the bottles had to recommend a lower dose than what doctors could prescribe. He told me that 600mg 3x/day is ok. That's just the info I got-it's not a medical recommendation for you!
