Result number: 2 Posted by Gail B. on 3/08/10 at 14:08 After doing reseach I have decided to 'survive' with my 2 inch painful fibromas. Thank you for your info. I don't trust foot doctors, or any Dr. for that matter. Do your own research! I heard about a GRASTON (sp) METHOD (Natural to try to break this fibrommas down)-ANYONE with any experience with this? Many Thanks to you all.

Result number: 6 Posted by GAIL M. on 9/28/08 at 18:08 Hi! I haven't been reading the board for a long time. I had problem with my 2 feet 2 heels spurs and I remember trying many things like all kinds of shoes insoles, acupuncture, a shot of cortisone in one foot, physiotherapy, and I forget one was like a ultrasound wave treatment. Then, I went to see this massage therapy person (he does not have a diploma) who massaged my foot and then taped it. Now, I don't have pain anymore. This person lives an hour away from Newport, Vermont. If anybody in Vermont would like to see this person (who lives in Windsor, province of Quebec) let me know. I will give you his address. GAIL M.
Result number: 7 Posted by Gail R on 9/10/08 at 14:17 I had the last surgery 3 years ago... I am almost 58. I have had it on both my heels and it got me back to where I can walk. I have had no problems until a month ago and I now have plantar facitis again. For me it did help. It is a long recovery period, I was in a cast for 6 weeks and then rehab, it took about 3 months to get mobile and 4 to really be where I could walk well but would do it all over again. Hope this helps..feel better soon!
Result number: 8 Posted by GailB on 8/26/08 at 09:37 I love the powerstep pro inserts I received from my podiatrist. This morning I called to get a new pair, and I was told that since my last appointment was more than 9 months ago I would have to come in for an appointment to get another pair. What a waste of money for me. The doctor told me there is nothing she can do for me other than surgery and I do not want to do that at this time. Is there anyone who sells the powerstep pro's online?
Result number: 9 Posted by Gail on 4/10/08 at 13:43 Please email me at msgail4145 at aol.com. I am from MA, and Soxfan grabbed my attention. Recouperating from gastrocemius recession and achillies lengthening for flat feet and Fasciitis pain over 7 yrs with one failed PF release done. I have some info to give you relative to 2 doctors. In the subject matter, put something in so I'll know its not spam.
Result number: 10 Posted by gail s on 3/21/08 at 21:20 Hi Dan, You will find other posts by me on line, however many have not been responded to, but that's ok. I notes yours and wish for you to know that I am going on7 yrs with what is thought to be PF...my list and yours could be 'cousins,' so I feel your pain. I won't repeat all from my posts, but you will find them on the message board. Please check out my most recent, where on the 26th of March, I will be having surgery for achilles tendon stretching. After all I have gone through, very similar to your issues, all kinds of testing, etc. the latest orthopedic felt this is the last option and I meet on Tuesday for a roundtable with 2 surgeons and surgery on Wed. I'm a nervous wreck, but at this point, I'm 52, teach and can't do it anymore because of the pain. I would be happy to talk further with you. The plan for surgery is to cut at the calf, stretch it and it 'should' allow more flexibility to the fascia. I have flat feet, and the nerve issues as well. This won't adress either or a constant swelling in the right foot (damaged a few yrs ago with a break to it), but I am working on it. Keep at it, challenge the dr's and just keep going and going until you find one that respects your pain and listens to your complaint, with an open heart. I'm very nervous/scared about the surgery, but after the years of pain, as long as I can't be made worse by having it, I think it's the only way to go, given all I've had. What is the Topaz? Keep in touch if you wish. Gail S.

Result number: 12 Posted by Gail on 3/20/08 at 14:16 I have not heard of this procedure, but am having achilles tendons strecthed (surgery) on the 26th March, after everything failing from shots, pt, cortison, failed Fasciitomy release and nothing indicative of neurological disordersm including nerve biopsies, EMGS, EEGs, all over my body in an effort to resolve. I have also found (finally) a fellow who makes me orthotics and takes the time to adjust on an as-needed basis with me, versus the Pods I had, who told me I had painful flat feet and wanted full blown reconstruction jobs done and that I could never wear orthotics of any kind. I can, and you just have to find the caring person Also, I had one full year of Saturdays from 1-3 hours of Acup. on the feet (bilateral pain) and it helped the tingling, burning, nerve issues to the point that hasn't returned. The PF strain is another thing and it didn't do much on that, but I would strongly suggest acup. for anyone who hasn't tried. I'm nervous over my operation, but have had enough and can only hope for the best. I would be interested in knowing what this TOPAZ surgery is. Good luck. Gail S.
Result number: 13 Posted by Gail on 3/17/08 at 16:46 Hi, I am scheduled for this on the 26th of March and wondering if you felt it was worth having it done, or if anyone else can enlighten me because I'm not sure this is the way to go just yet and have put it off twice now. I have bilaterial flat feet from birth and am a 52 yr old sub teacher...now disabled with this horrible pain for over 7 years and a faield release in the right foot in 04. I would also like to know about the recovery...were you in a walkable cast at all? I have a kyphosis so I don't want o use crutches and one dr. says I can walk with the boot, the other is saying no and we've yet to have a meeting of the minds. I don't knowif I can post my reg. email, but if possible, please feel free to email me at msgail4145 at aol.com. Thank you.
Result number: 14 Posted by Gail R on 3/06/08 at 09:35 I have had 3 achilles surgerys after having plantar fachittis (spelled wrong) releases, so a total of 5 foot surgeries. The 3 achilles tendon surgerys were VERY painful...but having come thru them (last almost 3 years ago) I can say that I am SO much better. NO I can't run a marathon , now my knees are arthritc and I also have some arthritis in my feet but I can go to the grocery store without riding the cart! I do not regret the surgerys though the achilles tendon is a slow healer. Don't look for a lot of improvement for a year , get yourself a really goood dr.. I used a orthopaedic , be realistic. I would do it again to get to where I am now. It is a long road back...after the first one I rented a wheel chair so I would not be so dependent and helpless. It really makes a huge difference in your recovery.I managed to do light housekeepig, light cooking and go about most of my daily funcions from my chairand it helps your spirits so much! I did not work for almost 4 months due to the type of work I did. We should ALWAYS weigh surgery carefully, there are risks with all surgery, but don't let naysaysersfrighten you. There are some very good outcomes!!
Result number: 15 Posted by gail g on 12/05/07 at 13:52 My cheilectomy & osteotomy were 2 years ago last Oct.. Mine was a pretty extreme case--with very little cartilage, almost no movement at all, a major bone spur, lots of crepitus & constant pain. The pain in the foot would wake me up at night & I could barely walk down the drive to get the paper without tears in my eyes. My situation began with a horse stepping on my foot as a child and then was made worse by intense distance running on asphalt through my 30s & 40s. Recovery after the cheilectomy/osteotomy was very, very slow, but I am quite a bit older than you. (late 50s at time of surgery) At 3 months post-surgery the pain was still pretty bad & I was really getting down. But---somewhere along the line pain leveled off to a dull stiffness. I am unquestionably better off than prior to the surgery. Not perfect, not like 'original equipment---there are creaks & groans & some soreness at the end of the day, but the foot is certainly functioning. It's unlikely that I'll ever jog again and thought of heels pains me to think of it, but I can still take daily hour long walks with the dog and am not handicapped when traveling. I Just have to be obsessively careful when choosing shoes & always use a custom orthotic on the bad foot.
Result number: 16 Posted by Gail R on 9/27/07 at 09:19 I had a mass removed from bottom of big right tow in April 07. Came right back and removed in June 07 along with bunion fixed. Left foot is the same. Started in june and can see mass and bunion has been present for long time. First pathology shows fibroconnective stroma with calcifacation and giant cell reaction. Mri did not show mass according to first doctor who did the first surgury without mri. Now she just wants to fix bunion. Went for second opinion. He said he can see mass in mri and also two nuromas in right foot and one in left foot. Also thinks I have plantar fibromotosis. He did steriod injections two days ago and making custom inserts for my shoes. What are the chances this will work? Do most neuromas need surgury? and how often is surgury needed to correct the fibromatosis? My feet feel like somebody beat the bottom of my feet.

For anyone interested something I will be doing is electro magnetic treatment a few days after surgery to speed the healing and shorten my overall recovery time. Luckily I am the Clinic Director of a facility that does this treatment,,,,,heres the website for others interested in what I'm going to be doing to heal quicker....www.amri-mi.com

But gailv you didn't give enough good information for anyone to say whats happening like you asked. Maybe if you put some effort into your question you might get a thoughtful answer.

I have been a waitress for 30 years on concreate and Feathersprings have saved my job.

I have had all kinds of tests and treatments, and still doctors are not certain what is causing all the foot pain. I realize that I don't have much padding under my feet and that my PF are very tight, but not everyone with this conditon has so much pain. Let us know if you find any kind of med or treatment that does provide relief. Suzy
Result number: 26 Posted by Diane D on 12/08/06 at 14:25 Hi Gail, I just read your comment and thank you very much for understanding. I was trying to find an email address so I could email you but to no avail. I see you must be from the Boston area. I am from Northbridge, Mass and I know all the hospitals you mentioned. I just got a night splint and all I can say is the thing is a pain. So far I have worn it 2 nights and both nights it has moved around so what good is it? I just called my primary MD as I had sent him a letter asking to please sign the DMV paper so I can get a handicap placard. This was a week ago, he is off today and the nurse said my letter would have gone to U Mass first then to his office which is only 10 minutes from my house. U Mass is like 45 minutes from here. Does any of this make sense?? Keep in touch and thank you.. Diane
Result number: 27 Posted by Gail on 12/07/06 at 22:39 Diane, I am in the same pain and have been for 5 years...your exact pain. I have been to (And if any dr's are reading this and think they can be of help, please contact me). Boston-Mass General Ortho/Pod. dept. Boston- Faulkner Hsp Boston-MGH- Neuro-immunologist...all kinds of blood work, all kinds of EMG's to rule out small fiber and large fiber neurapathies...these are EXTREMLY painful folks....prolong as much as possible. Boston-Neuro- Skin biopsy for who knows what reason..something to do with small fiber neurap. Accupuncture I did on my own. 5 Pods, all given up on me. Flat feet from birth, orthotics that are useless and much frustration. Acup. did help the neurapathy and knock on wood, that's better. My feet kill, I have had the "minor" 3 band release which did absolutely nothing! I teach, and am disabled from it. My POD gave me a note which I took to registry...if you go to the registry of motor vehicles on line at home state, you'll see a printable form..take it to the Pod and he'll fill it out. I'm open to suggestions, because I too, have had enough and I'd rather die than go through this pain and suffering. I also suffer with Kyphosis (forward curve of spine at T5/6). It has no bearing on the feet...they are just flat from birth, and when the Pods and foot/ankle surgeons can't see it, they can't fix it other than those who want to do an arthodecis, have it fail and then send us back to the primary who couldn't help in the first place. I have over 4 pairs of orthotics...I won't tell you how many shoes, boots, and nightsplints given to me by oen of the POds, is totally useless. I wish you well. Just know you are not alone. Gail
Result number: 28 Posted by Gail on 11/29/06 at 22:26 I'm a mess! I've posted priors and have gone through horrible treatments in Boston with neuropathy clinics, neuro's, ortho's, phsyiatrist and lots and lots of pain...some I would say was Torture! I had EMG's up the ying yang for small fiber neurapathy and large Fiber Neurapathy. I have had blood work to no avail, tests all show "within normal limits" and a skin biopsy done last week to rule out something else. I wear NB's 1122's with orthotics, but think they may be part of the problem. I live in the 1122's from 8am to midnight...too stringent on the feet, I believe. Today, I read about Stegmann/Haflinger clogs helping PF. I wonder if anyone can tell me if they do help, and if anyone with flat feet has tried anything in the form of a clog, and got results. I don't want to hurt my feet anymore than they hurt, but I'm also facing decisions now of the ortho's either cutting into heels the old fashioned way and doing a total reconstruction/orthodecisis job, or cutting into heels the old way and literally taking out nerves and bands. Any info appreciated, and thank you.
Result number: 29 Posted by Jeremy L on 9/16/06 at 22:47 If you go to Drew's corporate website (www.drewshoe.com), each shoe page has a silhouette at the bottom that shows it's basic shape. The Blazer is made on their 46 last. Most simply translated, it has a 3/4" heel height along with a broad stable midfoot and wide oblique toe shape. There are only 2 other lasts which are wider in the toes, and 1 shape which is broader in the heel/midfoot. The Terri is made with a significantly pointed toe and narrow heel, which makes it almost the opposite fit of the Blazer. The Desiree is a new style built on the identical platform as the Blosson (which they've made seemingly forever). It's a far closer match for you, in comparison. As mentioned before, the Martina has some similarities which ought to work pretty well for you. The Gail would also be a far more reliable fit than the Terri would be (with somewhat similar styling).
Result number: 30 Posted by Jeremy L on 9/16/06 at 07:59 No, it doesn't surprise me all that much. Given that this shoe is a good match for you, from a fit and function standpoint, it's construction is exceptionally supportive in the rearfoot. I can't remember what you decsribed as the conditions you are having treated, but this shoe has always been good for certain foot types which also tend to roll out excessively. So in and of itself, there are times where adding the additional support of an orthotic may feel too aggressive in combination. Finally, the Allure was made before Drew started doing multiple insert layers in their double-depth shoes. The new shoes use a 1/8" soft EVA insert with a brushed nylon cover over top of another 1/8" EVA insert of a little firmer EVA foam. Your shoe likely came with a polyurethane insert, which is both more cushioned and more supportive than what is distributed today. Long story short, please don't expect current Drew models made on the same last to feel quite the same as what your Allures do. As for other Drew models, the Villager is made on the exact same platform as the Allure. The Fiesta and Sedona are similar, although a bit broader in shape. I've had really good success with both the Elda and Martina. They are by comparison to what you're wearing a bit more narrow in the rearfoot, but have a flared lateral sole which promotes excellent stability. My patients also feel they look far trendier and "socially acceptable" (their term). The Gail is also built on the same platform as these latter styles. Best wishes with your continued scheduled adjustments.
Result number: 31 Posted by gail a on 8/10/06 at 18:33 I stepped on a palm seed, for you that are not familiar with it: it is lightly larger the size of a marble with a pointy end on it, on my heel. There was some initial bruising. But three weeks later it is still painful. It helps to stretch. After walking a 1/4 mile or so the pain stops. However intially it is quite painful. I'm 5'10" and weigh 150 lbs. The pain is starting to make me not want to step on it. Any suggestions?
Result number: 32 Posted by Gail G on 6/26/06 at 16:30 Hi John, Yes, it's possible I waited too long. From the initial exam and x-ray, the Dr. wasn't sure if there would be any cartilage at all when they got into the joint. It was at about the most extreme stage according to one system of rating. He did say that he could guarantee I'd be better after the surgery, but couldn't predict by how much. Pain is such a subjective thing, but after 7 months, it's safe to say that I feel as though I am somewhat better than before the surgery in one important respect. The pain no longer wakes me at night. I am also able to walk and jog a little bit with only minor stiffness while exercising. In the evenings, however, the underside of the ball of my "bad" foot can ache a bit and it still hurts if I walk on it barefooted in the middle of the night. I can't take much in the way of NSAID pain killers because of moderately bad tinnitus. GG
Result number: 33 Posted by john h on 6/20/06 at 19:55 Gail: Any chance you waited to long for the surgery? The longer you wait the less cartlidge you probably had which can result in a more difficult procedure. My first cheilectomy went well and I am basically 100% with that toe. I had a Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgeon with a Fellowship do the procedure. Now, I think I shall have to do the other toe. It is really starting to bother me.

Result number: 36 Posted by Gail on 6/08/06 at 19:19 thank you Flo for your kind words. I have already made an appointment with a doctor for my problem. I think after listening to this DR Z that I am cured of at least one thing and that is, looking on the internet for advice. I thank you though for your post and glad I am not alone in feeling that this Z person is a little light in the brain cell department. Thank you Flo
Result number: 37 Posted by Gail on 6/08/06 at 19:14 No you nitwit, I am not that Gail. This is the first time I have ever written here and I am not from Ma. I am not 50, I am not a substitute teacher and I most certainly do not have PF. So instead of trying to be a detective, why don't you practice Medicine, as you should be doing, if you are a doctor. Now move on, your starting to bore me.
Result number: 38 Posted by Flo on 6/08/06 at 18:16 You are right Gail about Dr. Z. Someone who acts and writes like a five year old cannot be taken too seriously in the advice department. However, there are some experts on this site who have a wealth of experience and kind hearts. You might check back now and then to learn of other people's experiences, and how they might help you.
Result number: 39 Posted by Ralph on 6/08/06 at 16:23 Sorry about the cold response you received from the doctor you visited at Mass. General. Some doc. have no bed side manor. Just accept that fact not fight it. I'm not a doctor but my suggestion is do nothing until you are comfortable with the solution given to you. Hopefully Mayo may provide you with the answers you seek. As I say I'm far from being an expert in the field of medicine but your description of your foot turning red, swelling, being cold then turning hot are ways that people with RSD sometimes describe their symptoms. This condition can start with the simplest of injury. You might consider going to an RSD forum and ask a few questions or begin to do an internet search on this condition and see how close it comes to what you experience. Please remember just use the information for comparison because you are not qualified nor am I to make a diagnosis. In other words take what you learn and form new questions to ask your doctor. I can hear the frustration in your voice and I'm sorry that you are having such a difficult time. Hope Mayo has an answer for you.
Result number: 40 Posted by Dr. Z on 6/08/06 at 15:50 Is this the same Gail that is in the Ralph thread. Anyone know.? Re: shoes for plantar f./ help for Baxters nerve please/thanks View Thread Posted by Gail on 2/26/06 at 15:47 I write to you from Massachusetts. I am a 50 yr old single female, currently "disabled" with Kyphosis at 75% and chronic PF, bilaterilly. I am substitute school teacher, barely able to continue working and am down to 1 day ever 2 wks, due to the pain of PF. I have been to the "best" our area can offer, and am ready to plan a visit to Mayo Clinic, for resolution as it's crippling me. I have had MRI's, EMG's, Bone Scans, Vascular Studies, Podiatrist, Neurologists, Physiatrist all involved. Above tests showed absolutely nothing! Pods no longer know what to do after having injected both heels beyond the "norm" to try to provide relief for me. Doses of Prednisone dose packs were given twice. I just came from Mass Gen'l Hsp, in Boston today, out of desparation and 4 sets of various types of orthotics. The Dr. was a foot/ankle specialist, who told me I had Baxters Nerve Entrapement, and that "Only surgey would be of help, but not a guarantee." He proceeded to tell me I'm looking at a year in recuperation for operation, extensive PT, casting, boots, crutches and I told him I had the kyphosis at 75% which couldn't handle this. His response was to "get a wheel chair." I am a teacher of children who suffer with ADHD, and let me tell you...his comment just upset me. Putting that aside and to try to keep this brief, I read your findings on line about PF. Other than such invasive, debilating surgery; is there not a study where there is a less invasive form of relieve, such as laser or a very small type of surgery? This guy wants to cut into the bottom of the foot, up by where the original PF from 3 yrs ago was (failed), up towards the ankle and because my achilles tendon is tight (always has been from what other dr's at times have said, but it's never bothered me and I do have flat feet (but there's an arch) since birth. No other deformities on foot..no blisters, bumps, corns, etc. Why is there such a descrepancy in the diagnosis? One Neuro told me I had Erythromyalgia because 1 of the feet turn red, and swells from an injury I had. Yet; he can't explain why the foot gets extremly cold, and extremly hot like it's on fire, and then he said "maybe you have Neurapathy." He also couldn't tell me what to do for Erythromyalgia, other than visit Mayo Clinic who's studying it. The other Neuro from another location for 2nd opinion, simply kept apologizing for my having this pain, told me he had it, but it went away..gave me neurotin to take...I'm not a pill popper per se and thus I don't take it. Rhumotologist (some inflamation of joints in body and spine from deformity) suggested it was Vascular, thus my seeing them and the reports came back fine from testing, and I just got nowhere fast, and deeper in debt. I went to MGH out of despair and my last "Push" to help myself, and came away still not knowing what to do. This procedure the MGH Dr. spoke of is just too invasive form me. I have had PT up the ying-yang; strapping and PF boots to no avail to wear at night, in addition to PT with iontophoresis. I am in intelligent individual, who just needs to walk, play, and work again. I'm sorry this is long! Any thoughts, help, suggestions, shoes,Dr'sm etc., greatly appreciated. Thanks, Gail 41
Result number: 41 Posted by Gail on 6/08/06 at 14:26 I don't police or judge, I gave you my opinion so don't you dare even suggest that I did that. I have every right to voice what I think, just as everyone else does. I have seen your postings on other sites and frankly they are scary. To give suggestions is one thing, but that is all you should be doing. Since you have never had a hands-on with any of these people, let their doctor determine the right course of action to take with them. Put them in the right direction and let them take over from there. Medicine to me is a seriously subject when discussing causes, symtoms and cures and I worry that people WON'T go to their doctors once they have advice here. That could cost someone more than time spent on a computer. Now end this thread and be done with it. I am.

I doubt if I was going to win with Ralph judging the debate but the debate begin over 20 years ago and has nothing to do with anything today or the quality of podiatry today. It like fighting the Civil War Again with everyone having their version of what happen and who won. Gail Seriously. There have been over the past ten years alot of disagreements on this site. Doctors, posters you name it. The site continues, posters are helped. Just so you know I have been here from the beginning. I still remember the day I started the Ask the Doctor section and answered questions days nites weekends holiday. Why because I enjoy doing this. Your Apple comment. I though was really funny. Stay for awhile and then judge me. You can even avoid me if you like but please don't try to police this site we have Scott Roberts for that job.
Result number: 43 Posted by Gail on 6/08/06 at 12:13 there is also a difference between helping and harming someone too. I do see what looks like good advice here by probably good doctors but take a look at Dr. Z's last post and tell me that is a rational person. Oh and Dr. Z, I do know how to laugh and do it quite often but I also know when things should be taken seriously. You have people here who believe a doctors word is law and that should concern you when you make wild statements. Enjoy your apple Dr Z, I hear it keeps the Doctor away. Lets hope it works
Result number: 44 Posted by Gail on 6/08/06 at 09:53 Hi Being new to this site, I have been reading these posts to see if there is an answer to my problem. Though I haven't found any answers for myself I have found something else. I found a doctor who said, "I am a child always will be and hope to continue in the future." I find this disturbing if he is indeed a doctor. I also found the whole thread disturbing. Either he doesn't take his profession seriously or he doesn't care to help the people who come here looking for it. Either way I have decided to not look further but to contact a doctor about my problem. The internet is a great tool if used correctly and obviously that is not being done here. Its a shame but this Dr Z is a very scary person who should not be giving advice to people who will likely listen to him. He sounds confused in some post and might need medical help himself. I hope the people who really need help will get it but I also hope they have competent doctors who don't see themselves as children.
Result number: 45 Posted by gail m on 4/26/06 at 18:03 First, let me tell you that I sympathize with you. I have been there, you know the pain and not being able to walk. I hope you can find an activity that you will enjoy and be able to do. If you decide to try bicycling, let me suggest to wear shoes with a thick sole. This will put less stress on your feet. OK, now for the weight, like I told you I ate low fat food (milk, cheese, margarine, meat, salad dressing). Then, I rode a bicycle three times a week. At first, a half hour a day and gradually was able to ride up to 1 1/2 hr a day. I would loose one pound a week. That was just from the diet of low fat and not eating desert. I would make it a challenge to loose just one pound a week. I am the type of person who can not go on a crash diet, otherwise I cheat to much. But, one thing that I discovered was that the more I exercised the less hungry I got. Maybe you knew that already. So, Robert hang in there. Let me know how it goes at the gym. GAIL M
Result number: 46 Posted by RobertCarol on 4/25/06 at 13:44 Thanks, Gail M. I used to walk 5 miles/day and of course, now that that has stopped, I gained the weight. Thank you for NOT saying swimming! Living in MYC, it's impossible and I don't enjoy it. BUT I'll try to join a gym and start a stationary/recumbent bike and try an eliptical trainer. They have spinning classes there as well -- maybe something to hope for down the road. How long did it take you to lose the weight? Sorry I'm obsessed with this -- I am so down about the weight gain -- it makes the feet situation all the more upsetting and angering.
Result number: 47 Posted by GAIL M on 4/25/06 at 10:30 Hi! Since I could only stand on my feet for about one hour a day, it was impossible to go outside for walks. But, I could ride a bicycle with no pain. I also ate low fat products (milk, cheese, etc.) Good luck GAIL M
Result number: 48 Posted by Gail on 4/25/06 at 04:53 I'm Gail S...you need to ask Gail "M" that question, and I'll also want to know the answer for the same reason you do...Gail "M"....how did you drop the weight? :O)
Result number: 49 Posted by RobertCarol on 4/25/06 at 00:56 Gail, How did you lose the 30 lbs? Since getting PF, I have gained about 30 lbs, due to not being able to walk the 5 miles a day I used to. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Result number: 50 Posted by Gail on 4/24/06 at 21:17 David, Your feet look a little like mine when they're stressed out, stood on at any length of time even in the shower. I am on them all day as well, but always had orthotics and good shoes/sneakers. I have PF or so they say, but they don't know...whatever this is, it's very painful. Look up Erthromelagia or erthroymelagia and see if you fit that diag. Also, for what it's worth, I always wore NB's, but recently had enough and have low arches. #1122 mens is what I got. It's a very "straight" last however, and took a good 3 wks to "settle" the foot in it...felt like a hard bed of rocks for a while. Now, the foot seems to like it once it's in it, and i am walking and standing more on it that I have, since this problem. I bought mens, as my rt foot swells and the ladies wouldn't accomadate it. I took out innersole & put my soft orthotic (semi soft) in it. Some wear them w/o orthotics. If you live near a New Balance Factory, you will find these around 50-60$. If you by in a sporting good store, you're paying too much. I have a warehouse like most, of shoes/sneakers here; but so far in the past 4 wks out of frustration, I bought these after being recommended, and so far, I'm glad I did. They're very firm, have anti-pronation support and might be an option for you. Good luck. Gail
Result number: 51 Posted by Gail on 4/24/06 at 20:52 Hi David, I was scheduled to start in Boston on this past Sat, but got ill and couldn't make it. I am scheduled to start up/consult/treatment for May 13th. I'll try to remember posting a response on the boards then. I will say, I had acup. in the past, & it helped. The only "downfall" if you will, is that you have to keep up with it...like a chiropractor. AT least that was my experience & I gave up due to the cost. On my feet....It's last resort more or less. Take care, Gail S.
Result number: 52 Posted by gail m on 4/24/06 at 19:20 yes, I did 2 years ago. Previous, to the acupuncture I had Ultrasound treatments, had lost 30 pounds. Maybe all these factors helped in having less pain. I must tell you that after each visit of acupuncture I would see a decrease in pain. So, you have nothing to lose. Good luck!
Result number: 53 Posted by Gail G on 4/13/06 at 17:28 Barbara, my cheilectomy and osteotomy were about 6 months ago (Nov. 05 and it's now April) and also have residual pain in my foot. It's an ache that sets in after about 15-20 minutes of walking. The foot still discolors at the end of the day and there's slight swelling over the incision. It's still a bit stiff though the dr. was satisfied with the range of motion (I cannot recall the degrees, but it matches my "good" foot). My Dr. said the pain and stiffness could be the result of scar tissue --- they could numb me up, give me a steroid injection and "work it out." Ouch! I'm not inclined to go back for more painful things to be done to my poor foot & I was hoping it will resolve on its own. Tell us more about your "chronic pain syndrome". How did they treat it and are you feeling better now? G
Result number: 54 Posted by Gail G on 4/13/06 at 17:18 Thanks for the supportive advice. Perhaps I had been overdoing it. I was elated by my early recovery and probably pushed myself too hard to get back to running. I am currently doing 2 20-minute dog walks and using a recumbent bike and eliptical trainer for cardio work. Guess that's pretty good for slightly less than 6 months out from pretty traumatic foot surgery and at my age (pushin' 60). PS Swimming is a pain since I have sensitive eyes from wearing contact lenses for many years and can't handle chlorine.

I've just had my appointment with Dr Dellon, I'll be writing a report on it later as many sufferers have asked me for an update. I will be posting it on my website this week. Unfortunatly I have a funeral and a birthday party to go to tomorrow, physio friday. so it will probably be at the weekend. What a week this is turning out to be! If you do not hear a reply from Dr Dellon soon, let me know and I will put you in contact with him. Best wishes, Helen. www.Tap4TTS.co.uk
Result number: 57 Posted by Gail on 3/14/06 at 19:01 Helen, I wish you well from Massachusetts with similar issues. I have sent numerous E's to the clinic, plus faxes and calls to no avail here in Boston. Hopefully, they'll respond. Wish you well. Gail
Result number: 58 Posted by Julie on 3/12/06 at 11:17 Gail Could you be overdoing things? I am not a doctor, but the four and a bit months since your surgery is nothing at all, much too soon to expect to be able to walk long distances, or run. Full healing takes its time, and the older we get, the longer it takes. Remember, that you have had FOOT surgery, and feet have to bear the body's entire weight. Don't ask too much of yours for a while longer. If it were me, I'd set my sights on the other end of the time line and look forward to October. And I'd stick to my running shoes, and I'd swim for aerobic exercise. .
Result number: 59 Posted by Gail G on 3/12/06 at 10:39 Greetings! I have bookmarked this discussion since I had a cheilectomy plus metarsal osteotomy with titanium screw (for hallux rigidus, stage 3) in late October 2005. My hallux rigidus had gotten to the point where it was crippling: I could not walk down the driveway to get the paper without severe pain. I couldn't even walk the dog without pain & limping. The operation was done by a well respected sports medicine/podiatrist who is a runner & biker himself. Initially recovery went more quickly than expected. I was up and about within the week and the incision healed quickly. However, the bottom line is that at 5 months out, I am still unable to walk recreationally or jog more than 10 minutes. After a few minutes, the foot cramps up & there is pain referred to the other toes. After the incision healed, I began intense physical therapy sessions twice a week. Though my range of motion is back in the joint (not as much as "original equipment," but similar to the other foot). Still, there is some swelling and discoloration at the end of the day, as well as some scar tissue that feels like rubber bands connecting to the adjacent metatarsal. There's also the occasional sharp stab of pain if I overextend the joint & I still have to keep the Aleve handy. I can only wear running shoes. The time-line I was given was 4 months-a year for full recovery (whoa--that's a huge range!). I am now 59 and was a regular, habitual jogger for 25 years--30 minutes a day, rain or shine. My inability to run has been somewhat depressing since it's pretty hard to re-create this level of exercise at a gym. Even so, I suppose you'd have to say that I am better off than before the surgery, but still . . . I wouldn't recommend this surgery until you are absolutely disabled by the pain. It's a long hard road to recovery! G

Result number: 62 Posted by Gail on 3/09/06 at 14:43 I will be happy to send you some pics if Dr. Z doesn't have them to forward to you;however I would need your reg. email address. Thank you. I continue to be unable to walk more than 15 mins, without inside of ankles under the heels hurting and feeling like an elastic band is wrapped around them. If I do that stretch I think you mentioned and put my feet bowing in like a pigeon toe, it helps. I can also take the opp. foot and push agains the heel of the shoe (Oppostite directtion from foot) and it helps to cut down the pain. IE: If you sit at a chair and feet are behind you under the chair, heel to heel. If I take the heel of the right foot and pushe it at the heel on the shoe of the left foot, it seems to "pull" or do something and it relaxes a little. I have Neurotins, but they were not fully explained to me...is it strictly for burning or would this help with this feeling in those area's of the nerves and the area right under the arch? THe foot does not burn as it was, but is feeling everything else mentioned above. Talk about debiliatation. Thank you, Gail

Result number: 72 Posted by Gail on 3/03/06 at 20:43 Dr.Z, One of your patients recommended I speak to you. Is there some way I can write personally to you versus taking up space on the pages here? I would then explain in depth, my issues, concerns, and distress of it all. Thank you, gail
Result number: 73 Posted by Gail on 3/03/06 at 20:25 Thank you for the suggestion, Dr. Goldstein. Appreciate your suggestion.
Result number: 74 Posted by Gail on 3/03/06 at 14:38 I write to you from Massachusetts. Thanks, Gail
Result number: 75 Posted by Gail on 3/03/06 at 14:36 Hi Sophie, Thank you for your note. I've given that some thought in the past as I notice sometimes I "tip" a little in just my standing. I've had chiropractors try to do some hip work a little, but nothing too heavy because they fear the spine. I've had muscle massage and general massaging which just leaves my body very painful and so much so, I stopped going. I have no pain from my kyphosis situation at all, thank God, other than my shoulder traps at times, but I'm thankful for that. I did see a "physiartrist" for "whole body" figuring out I guess...she did absolutely nothing for me, nor those who were there to see her on a repeat visit, so I didn't pursue. Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions. Gail

Result number: 77 Posted by Gail on 3/02/06 at 15:31 Hi Hazel, Am going to go to NB factory Friday with this number and see how it compares to their 1122 model. That too, looks like a clown shoe! I suffer with no relief from PF and now they want to do a full blown operation for baxters nerve at Mass Gen'l Hsp. in Boston, never having seen me prior to this first appt! I'm not happy about it or them, despite their name. I wear NB's and find they do have many models. The factory drives me nuts, as I'm there for a good 3 hours trying to see which shoes feel better and by the time you're done, you haven't a clue, and I come home without!! So, tomorrow, I shall take your number with me and 1122 on paper and go in search and compare (*if possible) the difference and will try to not look at any others. Thanks for your thoughts. Gail
Result number: 78 Posted by sophie dhenin on 2/27/06 at 02:37 Hi Gail - sounds like a nightmare! Has anyone suggested to you that the reason why you might be suffering from bilateral foot problems is that your centre of gravity might be compromised because of your kyphosis? With such a pronounced kyphosis your lower back is bound to be under intense pressure and physiological changes will inevitably have taken place in your lumbar spine and your hips. This will lead to altered tension in your muscles, for example your hip flexors (front of groin and thigh) - etc etc. But the end result will be pathological changes in your feet. There might be nothing you can do about it at this stage. On the other hand, there might. It would be worth seeing someone who looks at your WHOLE body and your postural tensions if you have not already done so. Sophie
Result number: 79 Posted by Julie on 2/27/06 at 01:42 Hello Gail You've posted your message at the end of a thread on the "Orthotics" board, where the doctors who help here may not see it. I suggest that you copy it and start a new thread on the "Ask the Foot Doctors" message board. To do that, go to the home page, and click on "Message Boards". There you will see a list of the available boards. Next to "Ask the Foot Doctors", click on "Post a Message". The doctors will be more likely to see your message, and I'm sure you'll get a useful response from one or more of them. I hope you will get a clear diagnosis soon, and a treatment plan that will put you on the road to healing. Best wishes for that. .
Result number: 80 Posted by Gail on 2/26/06 at 19:02 I have similar problem. I buy Dr. Scholls plain white (cheap) innersoles (flat w/no arch) and lay them in the shoes. They are thin enough, you can add 2 if you have to, in one shoe. How are those new balances? I have Nb's, but nothing specific to help the PF. Pod. suggested 1122's. Tried them on..they look like clown shoes and felt horrific, so I took them off and left them behind! good luck.

Result number: 83 Posted by Robert J. Sanfilippo, DC, CCSP, ART on 10/22/05 at 06:23 Hello everyone, and this post is for Shari and Gail. As far as learning the ART techniques, many types of providers can learn it including DC, MD, massage therapist, PT, and DO. There are 3 major courses offered with ART: upper extremity, lower extremity, and spine. You have to attend a 3 day seminar which involves a written exam and alot of hands on work. On the third day you must pass a practical exam with a score no less than a 90. So if you get through that you will be certified in that particular body area. I believe that any good ART provider will have all 3 of them and have done them for a few years. I have all of them, including biomechanics, and in November I will be taking a new one Long Nerve Traction. I really can't critique another providers work but I must say that you have to be very thorough when treating this type of condition. You must evaluate the biomechanics starting from the low back all the way to the feet. The muscles must be evaluated for aberrant motion and tightness. All of this is to try to correct the overall biomechanical fault that may lead to your acute/chronic overuse injury. When receiving an ART treatment you should know within 5 visits if its going to help. Everyone is different so there is give and take of course. I hope this helps you....
Result number: 84 Posted by Gail on 10/21/05 at 21:53 Thanks for the responses and I also am interested in the ART. Can anyone else address this and help us out. Last year when I had this, I don't remember anyone mentioning this. Is it that new? Does a chiropractor do this? Thanks in advance.
Result number: 85 Posted by Shari R on 10/21/05 at 07:55 Gail, if it makes you feel better I also cried in the Dr's office. That was a month after my EPF. Not only was I not any better, but my other foot now has PF. I did an ART treatment yesterday for the first time and I have an appointment with a Sports Med. Dr. next week. This is Dr. #3. Plus everything else I've tried. For the record, no I'm not any better after my ART treatment, but I don't expect immediate results as Elvis did. I did get an entire hr. though, but at $60. plus an hr drive I was pretty satisfied with the time I spent there.
Result number: 86 Posted by Gail on 10/20/05 at 23:55 Oops, I'm sorry, I just realized that I answered on the "foot doctors" forum. I don't even know how I got on here. Please forgive me.
Result number: 87 Posted by Gail on 10/20/05 at 23:16 Dear Kerriin, I'm sorry that I can't give you much information right now because I did not have an operation for my pf, but I wanted to give you my sympathy. I just happen to be up late tonight on this board because I'm so worried about this problem happening again after going through this last year. As I mention in my post below, it was almost a year of misdiagnoses, casts, shots, thousands of dollars, many doctors and lots of tears. I never knew anything like this could have so much pain. The doctors were either trying to make a "sale" or looked at me like I was making a mountain out of a molehill. I guess what I'm trying to say is that those of us on this board know how you're feeling and your frustration. This is a great site. It will get better. Please be patient. As far as your doctor saying it would be easy, I don't think that anybody knows what this is like until they've been through it. Anyway, please stay strong. Gail
Result number: 88 Posted by Gail on 10/20/05 at 22:32 Dear Robert, Thank you for your quick response. I did not realize that the pf may have been waiting for it to happen. Its such a catch 22. You can't really exercise while you have the pf, so you gain weight, which I believe contributes to the occurrence of this problem in several cases. I will take your advice and try the heat and ice. I am very lucky in that last time I did find someone willing to work well with me. I am so embarrassed to say, that after sitting in a waiting room with people with injuries so much worse than me, I ended up crying in front of this doctor over the frustration of something like plantar fasciitis. I felt ridiculous and yet, I had had enough with the treatments. I believe that people on this board understand. Thanks, again, for your response.
Result number: 89 Posted by Robert J. Sanfilippo, DC, CCSP, ART on 10/20/05 at 21:30 Hi Gail and I am so sorry to hear that you are experiencing pain. The PF that you may be experiencing may have been there waiting to happen. Fasciosis takes a long time to develop and many times you may not even feel it until there is that one time that sets it off. At home you may want to try some stretches with your toes against the wall and heel on the ground when you lean in and feel the stretch. I would use moist heat against your leg and foot before you stretch. Then after 5-6, 10 second stretches I would apply some ice directly on the skin where it hurts. Keep it there until it becomes numb, then take it off. If this doesn't help seek the advice of an expert. Chose a doctor who is well verse in treating the condition and someone you have confidence in.
Result number: 90 Posted by Gail on 10/20/05 at 21:19 Is it possible that after only one year of relief I have pf in the opposite foot now? I don't think I can go through this again. After seeinng a myriad of podiatrists and ortho guys, steroid shots and various physical therapy, I finally found a brilliant doctor who had a bone scan done and found it had turned into a fracture. I then went through months with a cast, etc. I have got drawers filled with all the stuff you can possibly buy off the web for this horrible problem and I need to exercise desperately. Lately, I have felt the stirrings of pf in in other heel. PLEASE, what is the best way to try to head this off? The coil shoe sounds interesting. I do know the thing about not walking barefoot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This board was of so much help to me last time.
Result number: 91 Posted by Gail H. on 10/16/05 at 19:01 I have had the real Tempur slippers for 2 months now and I wear them all the time at home. There are a few concerns though-1) You cannot get them wet EVER and #2 I can see the outerlining wearing out sooner than the foam. I also bought the Tempur mattress this summer and love it very much. I know it's alot of money, but, considering we sleep a third of out life, it's worth the investment!

Result number: 93 Posted by Tina H on 5/23/05 at 21:20 Gail, I'm not a doctor but I do not think that the pain is caused by the heel spurs but rather due to the inflammed fascia, and/or tearing fascia. The heel spur results when your body trys to release the stretching pressure on the fascia by actually "extending" the bone so the facsia doesn't have to stretch as far. It's a compensation mechanism. At least this is my understanding. Maybe I'm wrong! Doctors?.....
Result number: 94 Posted by GAIL S. on 5/23/05 at 14:13 I am wondering if P.F. and Heel spurs are the same condition or seperate issues. Does one cause the other. I was told by one Dr. they are seperate causes of pain.. Another Dr. says heel spurs, are a result of inflamation due to the plantars fascitis. Do heel spurs even cause pain ??? or is it the inflamation of the fascia ? Thanks......gail s.
Result number: 95 Posted by Gaileen on 3/17/05 at 04:02 I have had special orthotics made by the foot doctor, how ever I found them to be very hard to get used to. Iam still trialling them, not to give up but I get more relief with the orthoheal I bought at the chemist. I also found that stretching calf muscle has given me relief I do stretches every morning and evening. I had this condition once before but this time I over did it in a marathon walk, Now I am paying the price. Like everyone else with this condition. I am getting my foot xrayed because Iam not sure if its PL or stress fractures. I will keep you posted.
Result number: 96 Posted by Gail R on 3/08/05 at 21:52 Allen I am not a dr just a very experienced patient! I had this same problem on my left heel, (hagulands/pain at insertion of achilles) had two surgeries on it in the same year(yuck!) It is better now I can walk better but it still is not all together pain free. I now have this same malady on my other foot. Saw a podiatrist today and refused the injection he offered! Some times heel lifts can help for a time. Are you on anti inflams?(bextra, mobid, advil etc.) If it gets really inflammed as mine recently did with walking you may have to get off it for it to improve. I wish you the best, I think this is even worse than the spurs on the bottom of the foot.
Result number: 97 Posted by Gail R on 3/08/05 at 21:42 I have had the epf surgery on both my feet and it did very much help the inflammation that I kept in both feet. I had the surgeries a year apart. I have also since that time had a hagulands surgery and then another achilles tendon clean up on the same foot... 4 surgerys and now it seems the other foot is affected with the same achilles tendon insertion calcification problem!! Now THAT is the really bad one but the epf surgerys really helped and did not have a long recovery period as (at least for me!) Hope you feel better soon!
