What's a "recumbent" bike?

Posted by Sue B. on 12/28/98 at 00:00 (002910)

Sorry to show my ignorance, but what is a 'recumbent' bike? Is is just another name for a stationary bike?

Dear Sue: You probably have seen a recumbent bike but not known the name of it. You actually sit as if in a chair (it has a back support as well as a seat). There are no handle bars but there are grab bars down on each side of the seat. Your legs stretch out in front of you to peddle. Since your hands are free you can also use weights and get some upper body work as you peddle. I much prefer this to the regular stationary bike I used to have. Hope this helps. I have a Schwinn which I like a lot.

A recumbent (spelling?) bike is a stationary bike that positions your legs and feet out in front of you instead of under you like a regular bike. Most gyms have them. They are easier on your bottom and back and seem to do well for my feet (at least it doesn't make it any worse).
