I used to walk for exercise... too painful now!

Posted by Melanie on 1/28/99 at 00:00 (004075)

I am fairly new to PF, was just recently diagnosed. I have been in PF pain for about 1 year. I used to love to go out and walk for miles.. I have gained a lot of weight which I am sure hasn't helped the PF any. I would like some ideas on what else to do! No aerobics, riding a bike is painful, and my treadmill sits there unused. :(

Yeah, I used to walk for exercise too. I used to do alot. Now I can only sit. It is tough not being able to do what everyone else does.
Try swimming or water aerobics. It doesn't make you feel as good as walking does but it helps. I suggest deep water not shallow.
e-mail me anytime, am frustrated right along with you.
My foot hurts so bad I can hardly stand it. Here I have a date tomorrow night and going to Atlanta for the weekend. I tell you I am going to suffer on Monday. Oh well, having to live a totally sedentary life sucks!

Becky I also used to walk for exercise, 4-5 miles a day 5 days a week. Unfortunately I can no longer do this because it also causes me great pain. A new exercise that I have found to be helpful and also very therapuetic is yoga. One tape that I use regularly I Kathy Smith's new yoga. Yoga is very refreshing and also helps to stretch the muscles in the feet so they don't cramp up. You could also try water aerobics. It has very little impact on the joints and muscles. It is worth a try. I am able to ride on a stationary bike. I guess I should consider myself lucky.

I think the most important thing is to stay active and to not let this debilatating disease get the best of you. The more you let it take over the life the more depressed you get. At least this is what I have discovered. Please feel free to e-mail me. I am young and have struggled with alternative ways to exercise and relieve stress also. I wish you luck

Melanie,
You said that riding a bike hurts too? I'm suffering right along with you, but although I did have to give up walking as well, I now replaced it with the stationary bicycle at the gym.
It's the only cardio workout I can do, but in order to do it, I have to place the pedals directly under my toes and point them out.
It stretches my calf muscles too, which helps release the pain I have with the PF. Be careful not to overdue it though. You can e-mail me anytime you want to talk. I'm so happy I found this place to share this problem with people who understand. Good luck.
