Shark Cartilage - anyone else tried it?

Posted by Fred on 3/03/99 at 00:00 (005224)

J.B. posted a message a couple of days ago saying that after 6 months with p.f., he had started using shark cartilages and it worked to eliminate the pain after just 3 days! This sounds either too good to be true, or a hoax (i.e., a way to get people on this message board to run out and try something that won't do any good, but I ran out and got some anyway). I looked on the internet, and there doesn't seem to be any side effects to trying it, but it also sounded like it was more for joints, cancer, etc. (although I guess it does act as an anti-inflammatory, so maybe that's why it helped J.B.).

So my question is: has anyone else tried shark cartilage with positive results? Also, if you've used it, what about the dosage?

It says 4-6 740 mg capsules a day on the bottle, but I was wondering if anyone had tried anything different (something else on the net suggested 2-3 weeks of a capsule for each 11 lbs of body weight per day, which would be 16 a day for me and that sounds like a lot!).

P.S. - For anyone else who's thinking about trying it, the capsules actually have a strong smell of fish (as do the after-burbs), but what did I expect from a shark? Anyway, if it works, what the heck? Good luck!

I'm waiting for more info on it also. I wonder what Scott thinks? Also, if it is an inflammatory- do we keep taking what we are on now? What are you doing?

Glucosamine is supposed to be the best form. By comparison, chondroitin and shark cartilage are supposed to be useless.

Yes, I tried it for a few months. I can't remember the dosage because this was a couple of years ago. No change in my PF.

I think the problem with the shark cartilage is that the body has trouble absorbing it.
