I think that the stationary bike doesn't provide enough variety and that you may agrivate you knees, hips, or sciatic as you've indicated.
I try a few minutes at each exercise and the rotate to a different one, coming back to each exercise later. In this way the parts of you r body get loosened up and worked out a little at a time. Keep your heart rate up and don't pause bewteen execises (within reason).
Also do loosening up exercises before and after anything strenuous . For example, after lossening up I'll lift some weight and then do loosening up again and then go back again.
