back problems can cause PF

Posted by Sandra Z on 3/23/99 at 00:00 (005741)

My orthopod and physical therapist believe I developed PF because my gait changed when I ruptured a disk in my back and endured months of pain and ultimately surgery. The back surgery was a fantastic success, but my hamstring on my right leg (where I had extreme sciatica, shooting pain down the leg and numb toes) was very tight from months of misuse. The hamstring's connected to the Achilles tendon, which is attached to the plantar fascia. So, when I started to exercise again, I hurt the plantar fascia. Moral: keep those hamstrings stretched!
