First time visiting this site. Need to vent a little, if you don't mind.

Posted by Nancy in MD on 5/13/99 at 00:00 (006824)

Hi everybody. This is my first time at this site. It didn't occur to me that so many people have PF. I was born with flat feet. And through my teenage years, suffered with arch and ankle pain. (Sprained both ankles at once one time!) But there wasn't much I could do about it. My mother and grandmother made sure I had good shoes. But once you get out on your own, you really can't afford them. I'm 32 years old and have been in extreme pain from the PF for about 6 years now. I was a telephone and cable technician. But my feet couldn't handle it. I had been going to a podiatrist and he didn't know that I had PF and ordered some of those hard orthotics for my shoes. They helped the arch pain, but not the heel pain. So I went to a orthopedic surgeon. He discovered that I had PF in both feet. (Of course it's worse in one foot than the other) He didn't bother to tell me this until he was walking out of the room. I started asking him several questions about PF. Then before I left, he told me that I would have to give up the career that I had worked so hard to learn and loved. It crushed me. I now have new orthotics. Again, they help the arch pain. But not the heel, knee and lower back. I have put on so much weight because of this. I used to love to go walking but it hurts too bad. I am into music and I manage a band. I help load the equipment to and from the truck, but the rest of the time I have to sit. I REALLY HATE THAT!!!! I want my old life back. I am so embarrassed when I go out with my friends and I have to find someplace to sit all of the time. They understand. The surgeon that I saw said that he did not want to do surgery. Then I heard about the cortisone injections. NO WAY!! I just feel pretty useless. Thank you so much for letting me get that out. At least I know that there are others that honestly know what I go through. If anyone would like to chat, please leave your email address and I will get in touch with you. Again, thank you!!!

Don't be too afraid of the injections. Sometimes when you hurt soooo bad it will at least give relief for 3-7 days. I have had 3 injections total, over about 9 months time. The shot really didn't hurt any more than when my pain was at its worst. They do not recommend many of them. After about 5 months of extensive stretching, excerises and icing (and Birks) I'm finally about 90% back to normal. I even went to Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, TN last Saturday. Of course I had to sit down often, then ice when I got back in the car, but what a wonderful feeling to finally it out and about. Very best wishes.

Hi Nancy in MD, you DO sound so frustrated. I am sorry. I know it is!!! But you've found a great place. This site has helped me a lot. Lot's of helpful tips and Scott is doing a marvelous job! I think many of us have gained weight from the inability to excersise. YOu are not alone! Here, share this chocolate with me :) For medicinal purposes of course! :)

Wishing you all the best!

Welcome Nancy. I was born and raised in Baltimore. My husband lived in Hampden and I in Northwood. He went to Loyola and U. of Md. Med. School and I attended U.of Md. undergraduate and graduate. We have lived away for almost 30 yrs. now but have extended relatives there.

Your frustration is appreciated on this board. Other people, including the docs do not understand how this condition effects one's life. The effect is profound. I always ask people to imagine what it would be like to do all your daily activities with a 'nail pounded in your heel.' Mine hurt all the time and I have tried almost everything. My only hope is that someday someone will find a cure or it will just go away. All the treatments last for a while and then fizz out and the pain returns.

Keep coming here for support and maybe we can all help each other.

Hi Nancy, I understand how you feel. I've had PF in both feet 10+ years and had surgery in my right foot. I've tried everything...I have to say, being fairly new to this message board, that I have done my share of venting, too. But it's been a treat to find people who understand and can sympathize with the pain. We all know what you're going through and it really does stink!

I have found more suggestions, advice and encouragement from this board than from my doctor or friends (because friends have no idea the pain we feel -- especially when we look fine on the outside, but inside we know we are in excruciating pain). Stick around. You'll find a lot of good things to try and develop what works for you.

I don't believe this ever goes away, but we can learn to deal with it and work what's best for us. I'm just glad I'm not my 26-year-old friend who has just had 2 brain tumors removed and has only a short time to live....my feet seem rather petty when I think of her. True, I hoped that taking care of myself that I wouldn't have to face this sort of thing, at least not until I was much older (I'm 35). But, rather than dwelling on the 'what if's' I'm learning to cope and try new methods of healing or dealing with the pain.

As far as the weight, I guess we've all found that PF causes us to gain weight for we are not able to exercise like we use to...I have learned to eat healthier and take supplements for mental well-being and energy. Swimming -- haven't tried yet, even though I have a pool because I can't even get into the pool without my feet hurting, but I'm working up to it. Anyway, I have learned to be very patient with myself and the activities I can do.

Sorry to ramble, but I wanted you to know that we understand and welcome you to the site. You'll find lots of support here.

Hi Lisa. Thanks for the response. I really appreciate it. I understand what you mean about being thankful for not having anything worse. But I think when you have a problem such as PF, you tend to get kind of selfish and not put yourself in someone else's place because you are in constant pain and you just want it to stop. Hopefully sometime in the future they will find something that will 'fix this problem'. I think this website is great. Hope to talk to ya soon!! Thanks again!!

Hi Letty. Thanks for the response. I have the same hope as you do. To find a 'cure' for this. When someone asks me what the pain is like in my feet, I tell them it's like walking on a rock all day. I ask them if they have ever had a 'stone bruise' on their heel. When they respond yes, I tell them that is what it feels like on a constant basis. Sometimes worse. A friend of mine goes to NIH (in Bethesda) for arthritis treatments said that she is going to find out if they are doing any studies on PF there. If they are, I am going to call and see if I can get into the study. They pay for everything. I'll let ya know what I find out. Hang in there and talk to ya soon!!
p.s. Baltimore is doing fine!!!! I go to school in Baltimore city!!

Hi bj! How was Dollywood? I didn't know that it was open already. I have driven through Pigeon Forge. Would definitely like to go back. Thanks for responding. I really appreciate it.
I think that I am going to buy the night splint. I am really bad about doing the stretching everyday. But, reading your email gave me some incentive. Thank you. Hang in there!! Hope to talk to ya soon!!!
