I know how you feel - but it's important to take one day at a time, it's too much to think 'Am I ever going to be able to hike/run/walk again?' One way I've stayed positive is to try new activities - I go deep water running now too, even though I always used to hate the water (it's really not that bad!). And I've added a lot more upper body weight training. Find one thing you can enjoy doing today, and stay positive that things will get better.
