MRI specifications

Posted by Irene on 7/26/99 at 00:00 (009066)

I've had foot pain for years, and I'm about to get an MRI of the foot. I know a number of people have had to have more than one of these, and I'd like to get it right the first time.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to find a good radiology lab? My doctor hasn't been helpful in finding one and just says I can go wherever I want.

Does anyone know:
What's the difference between an open and closed scanner?
Should the MRI be lateral or longitudinal or both?
What subspecialty of radiology should I use?
What field strength should be used? (My doc says 0.5, whereas a previous doctor had told me 1.5)

I'd appreciate any info. Thanks.
