What bothers me the most about such theories is that people with legitimate illness may seek a psychotherapeutic treatment when they need medical attention. Also, some folk, already depressed and frustrated by their conditions, may become further debilitated by blaming themselves for their pain and their inability to 'will' it away.

No matter what the genesis of the disorder, the physical condition (and its attendant pain) is real and needs to be addressed as well as the emotional aspect of the dis-ease.
