surgery + 48 hours

Posted by John on 8/26/99 at 00:00 (010210)

arrived at hospital at 0615 surgery at 1015. 25% fascia release, tarsal tunnel release, and cheilectomy on big toe. stayed in recovery 45 minutes. moderate pain mostly in great toe. given demeriol for pain. makes your mouth very very dry. keep feet elevated above heart for three days. foot and leg bandaged up to calf with a half cast for bottom of foot and back of leg. make sure you practice on crutches first. demoril &other such drugs cause constipation so take some metimucel or some such fiber. surgery lasted 1 hr 45 min. have not seen doctor since surgery (open procedure). wife spoke to him but she did not understand what he said. something about blood vessels around nerve. will post when i have info. tried walker around house but crutches more efficent.

Good to hear you're hanging in! How long will you be on the Demerol for? Will they switch you to something else later? Take care and know that there's a lot of us thinking about you, and hoping things go well with your recovery.

John be careful...trying not to take the meds can wreck havoc with your body and elevate your blood pressure. It can cause your pain to get out of control and become hard to manage. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

demorial sucks! no nasids 1 week before or 2 weeks after surgery seemed sort of strange. IV antiboitcs before surgery and 40 demoriol tablets to take home. took 5 tablets. pain was manigable without pills by end of day 2. toe surgery was where most of pain was. the tarsal tunnel and fascia release were done from same incision and I have really felt no pain in that area. incision from inside of ankle to edge of foot.
