Your knees should bend slightly at the fullest extension. This is what i was told when I bought my bike at the bike shop. I haven't been biking completely with my toes nor completely with my arch. It is that I seem to use the ball of my foot and I haven't experienced any increase in pain since I sarted biking this summer. Good Luck
