back pain/foot pain

Posted by wendyn on 11/16/99 at 00:00 (012748)

I know that the two are often related, and one can cause the other. A lot of people on this board have back pain that seems to be caused by walking funny. I know that I have been questioned a lot on my back because I have both, and the doctors aren't always convinced that the pain isn't caused by my back somehow. But in your case, you don't have any pain in your back..would it be better to get the MRI now while you still have insurance or wait? It would be terrible if you put it off and then had to fork out all the money for it on your own later. Let us know what happens...

i had back surgery 20 years ago and although it cured the pain in my leg i still have pain in my low back that varies in intensity from time to time. i asked my doctor about the possibility of the back problem causing my foot problem and he thought there was no connection. the electrical studies on my feet would apparently have showed an indication. i think it would be rare for a pinched nerve in back to cause pain (only) in your heel. usually you would have some pain somewhere along your leg as well. i would go for the mri however

I had back pain too! I wonder if there is a connection. i kept asking my surgeon and after a blood test for arthritis he said no. When my feet are bad however, so is my back?! I found yoga stops my back hurting but the standing pose hurt my feet! So I do it sitting down, it works. Maybe it would help you. Hope you are having a good day and your feet aren't too bad.

Stuart, why wouldn't your doctor give you a blood test for arthritis? No matter who I see (podiatrist, specialist, PT) the first thing they ask me is if I've had a blood test for arthritis. (I have, as well as a bone scan - both negative) It seems like a pretty small thing that could provide valuable information...

Hi Wendyn,
I did have an arthritis blood test. I think I wrote the last message rather badly!

Please tell me about the Yoga. I want to start taking it now that my feet are better (but top of my legs and hips hurt). I had surgery in March. I am 85% better though my foot hurts first thing in the morning. I am overall pleased with the results of surgery compared to the previous two years of pain in my heel.

Yoga is really nice. I was doing it at an Iyengar Yoga centre, but my feet have stopped that. I have had surgery and plan to go back after Xmas but i think I will have to not do the strong standing poses.

I started going on the recommendation of a friend of mine who is 67. She had terrible back pain for over 30 years. She started doing Yoga 3 years ago and now is 95% better. My bad back is completely better. I get the occasional twinge when I haven't been doing the Yoga, a quick few poses soon puts it right.

I really can't reccomend it enough. It makes you feel mentally alert and calm at the same time.

Go and give it a go, all the people I have met doing it are really friendly!
