To adjust you have to 'give up' in some ways and accept your condition and try to make a new life out of what you have.
But if it is only that, then it is too much to deal with. But more important, you have to have a stubborn will to get better also, and believe it. That is the only thing that will lead to making your feet better, the rest is just 'feelings.'
Of course, this is coming from someone who hasn't got much better and sometimes feels bad about it.
