Posted by Cheryl on 2/28/00 at 00:00 (016534)

Hello, anyone out there from Boston?
I've been diagnosed with pf been in a walking cast done almost all conservative things for 6 mo. now (suffering for 9). just came from an orthopedic surgeon he gave me a compound called phenylbutazone/lido/10/5pl0.... not covered by insurance $30.00 I am to apply 2x a day for a week and go back . Now i have NOt had any tests except xrays, no blood , nerve studies nothing the doctor wants to do surgery and the podiatrist wants to put me in a real cast so i will not be weight bearing?? NONE of the doctors talk about Ossatron or ESWT WHY ????only the old fashioned surgery .. and if I get that my arch will fall and my foot will grow 1 1/2 size??I like my podiatrist but everything takes sooooo long.My pain is mostly at night.ANY ESWT SPECIALIST'S IN BOSTON????I'M 43 AND NOT OVERWEIGHT, VERY ACTIVE WELL used to be....i am becoming a miserable person.

Hi Cheryl,
I'm originally from the Boston area. I had surgery done by a doctor in Malden, a guy I used to work with. It wasn't foot surgery but his specialty is Sports Medicine and he does great work. If I EVER had to have anything done again, he'd be the man to do it.
He's out of North Suburban Orthopedics, his name is Robert Harney. His work is impeccable and he's not one to rush into surgery. He likes to have diagnostics done prior to any surgery. I haven't got his number at my fingertips, so you'll have to call information. He'd be a great place to start and if he won't help you out, he'll know who to recommend you to. Best of luck, feel better........Elise

Well, I'm not even close to Boston but certainly can relate to your problem.
I had PF just over one year before ever hearing of the condition and before seeking medical assistance.
After every passive treatment in the book, I had surgery on both heels 6 days ago. (FYI, it's now been 4 years since the first PF pain!) Quite a bummer but if this surgery works...and so far so good...I will actually be able to take a walk with my wife again.
Best wishes PF in Boston!
Dan

Dear Dan I am so glad you wrote back,,, my doctor wants to put me in a permanent cast (I have a walking cast now 4 mo.) and if that does not work the.. same surgery you had. 6 days and off your feet .. can you get up at all? I'm very worried about the post surgery .We have 3 teenage kids and I hate asking people to do things for me. Can you sleep? When will you walk ? Did you have general anestesia?I hope you are feeling GREAT soon.

Hi Cheryl,
There are no ESWT services in Boston as no ESWT devices have yet been approved by the FDA. Very few doctors in the entire US know much, if any, about ESWT.
It is something that you should definitely look into because the success rate is so high and there is no need to wear a cast or have a cortisone injection.
There are 2 types of ESWT...low and high energy. My company specializes in low energy which is highly effective and does not require the use of anesthesia....hence the lower cost. Our web site is http://www.sonorex.com . The closest clinic to you would be in Toronto...a very short flight from Boston. If you would like more information, give me a call toll-free at 1 877 766-6287.
Regards,
David

Dear David
Thank You very much for your response...I just heard of eswt a few weeks ago when I started reading this web site.. Good for you Cheryl. It's really important to know as much as you can about different forms of treatment, even if some of them are not financially viable right now. Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

David

Dear David Are they doing any study's on this here in Boston?? and WHY NOT? I checked you site out but only saw info on tennis elbow...

They are not doing any studies in Boston on ESWT that I know of. The studies are for FDA approval and are very controlled. Siemens is currently undergoing FDA trials for tennis elbow. In Canada and Germany, many other indications are treated with Sonocur, but the FDA study is currently only focused on tennis elbow.

David
