TOTALLY APPALLED AT MY POD'S OFFICE! Wait till you read this!

Posted by Beverly on 6/07/00 at 14:24 (021458)

Okay. My last straw.

I called my pod's office this morning, because after wearing this walking boot cast for less than a day, I have more heel pain and arch discomfort in it than I did in my quality athletic shoes.

The secretary said, 'Call back in thirty minutes. I'll check with the doctor.' I called back but she'd been too busy to ask. 'Call back later,' she said. So, I just called back after lunch. You will not believe what happened next!

I was asked to 'refresh them' on what my question was. I was talking to the other secretary. She went away for a few minutes. I thought she was talking to the doctor. She came back and said, 'Take the boot off. Stay off your feet. Either she or the doctor would call me in the morning.' I said, 'Is that the doctor's specific advice?' Well, get this! The doctor was out of the office! Not available to be asked! Once again, the main secretary was dispensing medical advice! I've seen nurses more cautious than this woman!

Well, I'm getting smarter. I'm keeping my boot on and staying off my feet as much as possible. Last time when I listened to her and against my better judgement tried crutches, it caused a greater injury to my right foot while trying to stay off the left foot, and I am still trying to get the 'post crutches' upperbody kinks out from my previously healed old shoulder injury. My massage therapist was so nice. He actually prayed for me at the end of the session and offered to make a house call at no extra charge! He says my shoulder is a rock, worse than he's ever seen me, but hopefully, we can work it out without having to go back to PT for my previously healed shoulder! I can't tell you how mad I am at myself for trying those crutches!

I can't get in to see the top rated ortho guy until next month, and it will be two weeks before I could see the most popular pod, but I found another pod through the guy who fitted me for my boot. I'm seeing him tomorrow. The PT type fellow who fitted me for me boot reccomended this other pod, because he said, 'He's young, dedicated. He's not married. Has no children. Feet are his whole life! This is the kind of guy who probably comes home at night to read pod magazines until he puts his head on his pillow.' I was also told that he is so dedicated to his patients that he does follow up calls with the the medical supply place to make sure that his patients have been properly fitted for their boots, ect. That's all I know about him, but it sounds promising.

Thanks for letting me vent,
Beverly

Having serveral of them.

Today I saw a Rheumatologist, to rule out other soft tissue problems and diseases making sure I was treating for only PF. Indeed that
was his confirmation, but he did all this without examination. I guess observation is the latest diagnostic tool used by todays specialist.

After my observation, he did agree that physical therapy was in order, however if it didn't help within a month an MRI would be ordered to check the condition of the Plantar Fascia. I have to give him some credit he did know about ESWT. His opinion -- not enough
data on it. My opinion it's better than surgical alternative he described.

My decision---I plan to continue in Physical Therapy, stop the Rolfing, continue my stretching, use the PFTs, massage, ice, read this board, and pray a lot. I heard red wine may help, I like that
suggestion.

So much for adding a new doctor to the mix.

Well, Beverly, the whole pack of 'em sound like real winners. If only this were unusual.
Good for you for taking the initiative and searching out more promising prospects. They certainly don't find us, as we sit at home in our chairs, do they!
Best of luck --Nancy

Our major problem with PF is that no one knows 'for sure' what is generating the pain. Most quickly jump to the inflamed fascia as the pain generator but there are reputable doctors who think the nerve (baxter nerve) under the fascia is the culprit. If the pain generator cannot be definitely identified then treating the problem will continue to be difficult. then there are the other possiblilities of compressed nerves in the ankle, bad back, and a host of other possibilities.
