The orthopaedic surgeon recomended the following: sitting in a chair lean forward with foot flat on the floor, exerting presure on leg ( by putting hands on the top of thigh/knee of foot being streched). Continue to move/slide forward in the chair to the point where your heel begins lift off the floor slightly. Hold for approx. 15 seconds, repeat. Although I wasn't told this, I believe getting in a baseball catcher's croutch and leaning forward is the same effect.
