Last pod. visit today......a bit long, sorry

Posted by Kathy on 8/16/00 at 17:00 (025587)

Had my last pod. visit and sure enough he discharged me because I wouldn't let him operate on me, I asked him to do two things for me before I left, 1. write me a presciption for the custom orthotics from the pedorthist and 2. write a letter to my HMO telling them that all non-invasive conservitive treatments have unsuccesfully been tried to treat my pf and that he was recomending ESWT, my insurance is refusing to pay unless I can get letters from my pod. and family doctor and they both support the ESWT, then they will take it under advisement and give me there dicision. When I gave my ex-pod. the ESWT material a few months ago he threw it in the garbage and said it wasn't good medicine so I thought my chances were slim to none today but all I had to do was mention DR. Weil's name and his whole tune changed. He told me he still doesn't believe in ESWT but who cares I have what I need from him and after one year of being intimidated by him I'm through and ready to move on . I need to get a few more things for the insurance company, they want any information I can give them on orbasone including any clinical trial info. can anyone point me in the right direction on where to go to get this info. Thanks

I must have missed something. He discharged you because you won't let him splice on you? I thought the bottom line was that surgery is a very personal and individual choice. I can barely believe that he could discharge you on that basis. It seems that his hipocratic oath (First, do no harm...) would require that he treat your symptoms and make you as comfortable as possible until your body either mends itself or YOU DECIDE that surgery is the right choice for you. Of course, if he has a 100% surgery success rate, let me know.

Oh well, I know breaking up is hard to do, but you're better off without him. You can do better and now that you've got your walking papers, maybe good things will start to happen for you. Go for it!

Hang in there Kathy!

Kathy,

I'd say good ridence to that pod if he discharged you because you refused surgery. My overall experience with pods was bad. I went to three of them, and two of them, I couldn't stand at all. The other one was so-so. I like my orthopedic sports medicine specialist much better. Is there anyway you could be seen by an orthopedic surgeon - especially one who specializes in the lower body?

One of the most valuable things I have learned on this board is to stand up for myself as a patient and keep searching for the right doctor. I came to the conclusion that I wanted the most specialized, most highly educated and well regarded ortho I could find. It took months to get into see him, but I am happy that I did. Whether he can 'fix' me remains to be seen, but I feel sure I am in the best hands in this area.

If he threw the material you gave him in the garbage, that does not sound like a very open-minded doctor to me.

Good Luck,
Beverly

Kathy - You really do need a new doctor, a real doctor. Check out this website:
http://www.aofas.org/ It is The American Orthopedist Foot and Ankle Society. My orthopedist is on this list. A few months ago I was begging for surgery, and he wouldn't consider it. At this point, I am thankful he said no. Terry
