Pain on outside and ball of foot

Posted by Marti on 12/11/00 at 15:02 (034698)

I have been having pain on the outside and on the ball of my foot for several months now. I went to a podiatrist, who gave me some Ibuprofen, some steroid injections and had me do physical therapy for a few weeks, it was better for a while, but it's now gotten worse. I'm an active stay-at-home mom with a 1 and 4 year old, so it's hard for me to get to these sessions anymore.

The pain recently came back, and it's worse than ever! It seems to shoot up my leg, and it's now on the whole outside of my foot as well as the ball of my foot. It's worse in the morning. Ice helps a little, Ibuprofen does not. I can barely stand to walk. I use Powersteps religiously, and only wear athletic shoes or good quality, good fitting shoes. I do practice yoga. I am fairly heavy though.

Anything else I should know? Anything else I should be doing?
Thanks, great site!
Marti

Hi Marti

I'm sure the doctors will respond to you, but I'd like to make a suggestion regarding your yoga practice. You're probably already aware that you should never go barefoot, and that goes for yoga practice too. I teach yoga, and for the past four months have been wearing birkenstocks both to practise and teach. One of my students confessed to having PF when I told my classes about mine, and I asked her to wear shoes when we do standing exercises. She is now more comfortable.

For me, standing has been as painful as walking, if not more so, so I have been going very easy with standing poses in my own practice, and doing more sitting and floor work.

All the best, Julie

I would check for a neuroma in the third interspace of the foot. You could have a stress fracture in one of the metatarsal bone and or tendonitis of the personal brevis tendon. You need another examination and possible mri
