Posted by Nancy F on 1/31/01 at 18:36 (037897)

I have had very painful weak flat real flat feet for 20 years already. Please help me.DR calls it PF. I do not have heel pain though. It is very severe arch pain. The feet r like pan cakes. I do need to lose 60 lbs but that wont give me strong feet. What does the tapeing do anyway & how PFTen do u have to do this? I keep reading about this. I went to physical therapy 20 times already& it feels great for about 2 days then I am back to the same problem. I can never have a stand up job. They hurt all the time. I am streching also.. Please I am soooo desperate . Please e mail me at Frasca2986@aol.com.. . I rerally appreciate it. I am very depressed about this.

Taping, Rest, boot casting. and orthosis are the main stay for treatment.
The cause of this problem could be posterior tibial tendon tear or tendonitis. The fact that it does feel good could be a sign that the use of a well made orthosis along with the proper shoe could help you .

In the mean time an elastic support called futuro will support the arch.
I would also use a stiff shank shoe with a very deep heel. To get this under control high top boots with very good stiff shanks could help.
Is this pain in both feet.

Give us more information. Richard our on board expert in orthosis and shoes could give you additional information in this area.

I would like additonal information about your condition if you would like to give it to me.

Hi Nancy

I'm not a doctor, but I want to welcome you to the board. You will get a lot of support and information here.

Read the PF Book. Even if you don't have plantar fasciitis, it will give you a lot of information about foot problems in general, and it's good to be informed.

With flat feet you might well find that you would be greatly helped by properly made orthoses - this is something you could investigate.

Have you been to a foot specialist to find out exactly what is wrong (apart from flat feet)? You need to be sure you are doing the right kind of stretching for whatever the problem is.

Taping has been a big help to me, and there are instructions and illustrations for it in the PF Book. It supplies some support to the arch, so you might find it helpful too. I applied it every day for quite some time (using the simplest method illustrated) and it was a life-saver while I needed it. But I would suggest you try the elastic ankle brace Dr Z suggests first: it's simpler to use, and you may find it's enough; some people have. If you find that it helps a little but not enough, then you might like to try taping.

There are exercises you can do to strengthen the muscles of your feet without causing further injury. I would be glad to suggest some for you (I am a yoga teacher) but I'd need to know if there is something else going on with your feet besides flatness. You can e-mail me if you like.

All the best

Julie

The pain is in both feet. I would like to know if u think one orthotic is better then the other? Are prescription ones better? This foturo brace,Is it for the ankle or arch? Can i wear this with shoes? I have ne ver seen one for arches. It sounds like a great idea. where do i get this? Can I tape my own feet. I really appreciate the feed back from u Dr.Z and also Julie. Thanks so much.

Nancy, the Futuro ankle support, although intended to support weak/sprained ankles, goes right round the sole and the top of the foot as well as the ankle, so it also gives good support to the arch. I would imagine you can buy one in a good sports equipment store, or a large pharmacist's store, but perhaps someone who lives on your side of the Atlantic can tell you better.
