Foot / ankle pain

Posted by Jim L on 2/05/01 at 11:28 (038227)

I sprained my ankle about 3 1/2 years ago and have had two surgeries to remove bone fragments from the ankle area (subtalar region).

These surgeries have not alleviated the pain (the last surgery, scoping the ankle actually may have increased the pain somewhat) and a podiatrist I am now seeing has given me inserts in my shoes. These devices seem to be helping the pain zero zilch nada, and both this podiatrist and my orthopedic specialist who did the surgeries have mentioned the possibility of fusing bones in my foot. The reason for this is that the CT Scans have showed arthritic deterioration in the region.

I am all for fusing the bones...if it is the problem and not just symptoms of the real problem. Are there alternatives or maybe something the doctors are not considering?

The joint surfaces are damaged and you probaby have bone rubbing against bone.

The orthosis are suppore to decrease the motion of the joints and take the weight away from the joint. Fusion is one of the most common surgical procedure to stop motion and to stop the pain from damaged joint surfaces.

If you have tried orthosis , braces, nsaid etc then joint fusion is the procedure to consider next. If there is any specific information about this procedure please just ask.
