13-year old with very painful heel

Posted by Soni C on 3/15/01 at 10:51 (041549)

Most of the information I've found relates to adults. My son started having severe pain in his heel during basketball. Thinking it was the shoes, I didn't worry very much - figuring he would have to break them in and that he wasn't used to the hard court.

Basketball has been over three weeks now and he still has pain. Now that track season has started, he is really limping. I have made an appointment with an orthopedic specialist. Should I have him see a podiatrist instead? I don't know how deep into the speciality area to go.

Thanks.

He is a little older than the age group, but he still might be suffering from Severs Disease. This is a painful problem effecting the growth plate in the heel. It is important that he be evaluated by an orthopedic or a podiatrist. You have to rule out a fracture of the heel bone and other possible causes. Dr. B.
