navicular and PTTD surgery

Posted by kervin k on 4/20/01 at hrmin (045204)

hello,

i have had left arch, ankle pain for over 3 years. i started w/slight but noticable PF for nearly a year, then developed a painful accesory navicular and PTTD after wearing many different custom orthotics which was far worse than my PF and kept me off my feet most of the time.

after having seen over 10 different specialists i am getting surgery next month. the doctor is
removing my accessory navicular bone, fusing one bone in my foot (to create a stronger arch) and
repairing my PTT (it is swollen and painful but not torn according to the MRIs). i will be in a cast for 6 weeks.

i have some questions:
what kind of PT if any should i do w/the cast on? what about resting, elevating, icing?
does fusing one bone (which does not affect my motion much) create any long term problems?
does removing the accessory navicular create other problems?

thank you for you comments!

Hi,

Tell me alittle about your age, occupation etc.

Very briefly you will be in a cast for eight to ten weeks, with no weight
bearing allowed. After this physical therapy is a very good idea. After you tell what you age is and your occuption then I will be able to advice as to what you will be able to do and or achieve.

Good luck, sounds like the right choice.

hello dr zuckerman,

i visited you back in november of 2000. i was visitng nyc for a week and came to see you. the ESWT gave me some relief from my problem but i still have recurring pain while walking etc. i wish i would have done this procedure when i had the PF symptoms!

my age is 30, 5'10', weigh 185 (i am not overweight but i have a large bone/muscle structure) i am a manager/engineer and spend most of my time in front of a PC. although before my foot pain i spent hours excersing daily (surfing, running, biking, snowboarding, blading, windsurfing, etc.) and hope to do this again after my surgery!

thank you,
