foot spasms,

Posted by Tom S. on 4/22/01 at hrmin (045395)

DR.,

My son has pain in both feet. He is 14 yrs.old and this came on fairly recently. His symtoms are as follows.
1. he does not rotate ankles when walking, does not lift heel either.
2. his feet appear to be in spasm ( locked up ) after spending some time on his feet.
3. he is flat footed.

He has been checked for lymes disease twice, and has been in hospital for cortisone treatments. These seemed to give him more flexibility however his pain remains. All bone scan, x-rays, catscans, etc. appear to be normal. I was reading about a treatment called shockwave treatments delivered by a machine called Ossa Tron. Can you recomend anyone in New Jersey area that might have expertise in this area?

Hi,

This is typical in very active young patients that have abnormal foot function such as flat feet which is usually associated with abnormal pronation. This where there is abnormal movement in the foot and ankle joints. The spasms are from the over use of his intrinic foot muscles.

A complete biomechanical and gait analysis is important to determine if orthosis inserts would help him.

We are in South Jersey. Let me know where you live and I can direct you to a podiatrist in your area.
