ankle pain

Posted by louise on 5/20/01 at 12:37 (048367)

I have been getting intermittent pain in the back of my ankle for a long time now. (It often feels like its in my achilles area). However I also get pain in the arch of my foot too (A very strong burning sensation) although this doesn't happen so often. I also sometimes get pain in the bones that run down the top of my foot.
When I get the ankle pain it's really hard to walk (I often end up limping) and usually happens if I put high heels on (even though I try to only wear them once a week). I have seen an orthopaedic consultant who wasn't much help (he just told me to never wear heels again) so now I am going to try a different type of consultant.

What I need to know is, which type of consultant should I see to get this diagnosed / treated? Could a rheumatologist help? Or are there specialist foot doctors out there? Can anyone recommend one based in England? (London)
Replies appreciated! Thanks

Louise, I can't recommend an orthopaedic consultant, but you could try my podiatrist. He has a website:

http://www.london-podiatry.com .

Ron has a good knowledge of biomechanics. He is head of podiatry at Guy's, and is foot doctor to two football teams. The clinic is in Lewisham, but he now also working out of Harley Street.

If I have a criticism of him, is that he is possibly a bit too keen on surgery (but exhausts all conservative measures first) and has been unresponsive to my attempts to interest him in ESWT. But nobody's perfect, and I think he is good.
