MaryS Hello you sound upset on Dr. board

Posted by Tammie on 6/09/01 at 21:39 (050361)

Mary , hello my friend ! You sounded panicy on the ask dr. board! If you are scared or worried there is a medical problem please call your Dr. if he is a good dr. he will hear the panic in your voice and be able to calm your fears or direct you for medical care!!! It is such a long weekend when you are frightened!!! I wish I could tell you something but I am not a Dr. and I did not have your type of surgery so I dont even know if it is similar! I do know swelling seems kinda the norm with surgeries, which generally they tell you to ice and elevate above the heart. Do you have fever? Is your leg hot to the touch? Reddness may or may not be normal,I would hate to guess as I am not the dr. I have been told many times here if you are unceratain and you have pain or something does not seem right to You , you should contact your dr. as that is what he is there for plus he may want to know if it is urgent to you there is always the ER room, I hope you are all right you just have a ugency about it. I hope that you are trying to hard to get back to the (normal ) things in life as as you might have observed here healing takes TIME!!!!! And I understand you might be feeling anxious worring about class and preperations but it will all work out now relax and take one day at a time, just one bitty step ,then the next! You have chatted with me for some time now and you tell me you have wonderful friends and I am sure if it gets close and you are not able to get things done that your friends will help you! That is what being a friend is about ,HELPING each other! It seems like a couple of weeks has been forever I understand but just think at the rewards you will recieve if you follow the dr.s advice!!!!! Maybe a nice healthy foot! Please let us know how you are! It may take some time for a answer on the board as it is a weekend and sometimes slower, but i have seen dr.s on late at night or maybe they are in different areas then me lol!Ok friend relax and take care and please let me know how you are doing!!!!! Goodnight!

Sorryyyyyyy

Re: Tammie-My friend!!

Mary S. on 6/10/01 at 00:26 (050368)

I can count on you to make me feel better!! I think when we changed the bandage today and I saw the redness, it made me nervous. On top of all the other problems, I just really needed some answers and not many people have had this surgery, I guess. I am seeing the doctor Monday afternoon, and I will have a list of questions for him. I guess I am too anxious. No, I am far form getting back to the normal things. Still elevating and icing and moving very slow on the walker. My husband bought some bicycle gloves for me today, and they feel so good to my sore hands. I just wish I had them sooner.
Tammie, I hope that you are doing well and that all is well at home. You are a trooper, and I admire you. What about your healing? How is it going? Thanks so much for the words of wisdom tonight. You made a difference. Stop worring about spelling, it's fine, and it doesn't matter.

Re: Re:Marydid u see what Dr. Z said?

Tammie on 6/10/01 at 13:02 (050391)

Mary Dr. Z is worried about infection there,Did u read what he said? That is why I do not want to give any advice to any one ,cause you do not know, especially if you can not see it! Does it still look red? Is it weepy or any discharge around incision? Any smell?Any fever? See those would be all important infection signals ,as we are taught for looking for signs of infection, but when it comes to dr.ing your own wounds it seems as we tend to not think logically. I think if you even think there is a infection call your dr. he may want to start a antibiotic or send you to the er room. I would hate for you to have so much extra pain and trouble and really If I were your dr. I would want to help you and assure u either way! Please take care and let us know ,I will be watching for your updates! And see swelling and overdoing lol I hope that everything is going well and that this is the normal healing process. Did You have antibiotics before the surgery or after? Take care must run now had to check on you tho! Hugs

Re: Re:This is my story

Tammie on 6/10/01 at 13:11 (050392)

Well as to my progress here it is,

1, I can now walk on my heel as before surgery I could not at ALL!

2,The pain is almost none during the daytime as long as I am moving!

3,I sometimes find without realizing it ,I am walking on my toes again (when I notice it and step down I find there is the old nagging throbbing) a tenderness still.

4,I hate nightimes as that is when the demon foot wakes up!

5,I have a numbness at times, tingeling ,a electrical type feeling some outer side of foot pain but bearable till nighttime!

6,I am going on with my life and figuring worring will not fix it and I dont have the patience for this as it is all supposed to be normal healing process I was told so whatever I dont need sleep I can live with pain and if I cant oh well!!!! I return to the dr. on the 29 and hope to be done with all of them there and released to return to work! They dont help me anyways so why pay for nothing.

So this is my life and I am pushing foward and getting busy! If not I get to darn depressed and have not much time for that! So if u ask me how I am I am going to say fine!!!!!!! Take care to all

Re: Tammie

Mary S. on 6/10/01 at 13:55 (050396)

Yes, I saw Dr. z's answer. Yes, I had antibotics during surgery but not after. No smell or oozing. Just red around the site. No fever, but bouts of chills and then burning up. Going to Dr. tomorrow and intend to get answers!! I feel really tired and sleep alot!! It has rained for days here and more of the same for the next week!
You are a sweet, sweet, heart, Tammie! Bunches of Hugs!!!!

Re: Your story

Mary S. on 6/10/01 at 14:03 (050398)

No pain during the daytime! That is GREAT!!!!! Try not to walk on those toes. That could create a whole new problem. I ended up with fragmented metatarsals from doing that years ago--horrible experience. Take something for the pain at night, I'm sure you do. Maybe take it an hour befor you plan to be off your feet, so that it can start working. Have you every tried Ambien, a sleep aid, for about a week to get you back on track in a sleep pattern? It works like a charm and no grog the next day at all.
Tammie--I'm praying for pain free feet for you. Thanks for taking the time to give the update!! Hugs!!

Re: Tammy, don't rush it !!!

BrianG on 6/11/01 at 06:31 (050424)

Hi Tammy,

About #6, I know you want to go back to work, but please listen to the voice of experience. Once you sign off and say your well enough to go back, your going to loose some of your rights. Don't do it. If it takes an extra month, you'll just have to deal with it. In the whole scheme of a working career, an extra month isn't going to mean too much. It WILL matter if you do go back to work and your healing stops at that point.

It sounds like your doing better, except for nights. If you go back now, your risking that night pain for ever, not to mention there is a good possibility it will regress and get worse. Your probably one of the people that needs an extra month or two of rest. Good luck.

Re: Tammy, don't rush it !!!

Tammie on 6/11/01 at 07:56 (050428)

Well Thank you for the advice! But seeing as most here, and here at home and at my place of employment, does not hear what I say,or understand me I guess I have proved my point . IT DOES NOT MATTER,if I go back to work as it is deemed better! I stated that it does not hurt as long as i am MOVING ,I am walking on my TOES Why? Pain it is NOT gone even in the daytime so much for the healing process I suppose this to is normal?See what I mean this is what people WANT to hear they do not want to hear that yes there is pain still sometimes so much that I HAVE to walk on toes. People want to say yes it is going well and that well you are about better huh, well in there eyes maybe yes, but to me yes I have 1 victory I can put weight on my heel and for how long I wonder.I am just tired of this whole thing trying to help others think that the pain is gone noone wants to know the truth and neither does the dr. So I am done with this whole thing, I will not say one more thing about this to anyone they ask how it is it is fine the dr. will say it is 100% right I will say yes whatever,it does no good they say I cant hear what my body says but people dont seem to hear what I say either ,cant sleep well gee wonder why do they think it is cause I sleep all day? Or that I like being restless or up all the time I dont have babies to get me up and interupt my sleep I have a stupid foot. But it is ok to cause it is all better this to shall pass and this to is all in the head! I am totaly fed up! I am done done done I have gone on with my life and tomorrow will be 8 weeks post op and yes there is improvement, but not enough to have gone thru all of this but I could not have lived with it the wayit was before either, so guess I will be able to say at 6 months or a year if it is totaly healed! And Brian what would I have done if I was the only income (like you) I would have had to work just like you are. Now I have till the end of the month left and miracles happen ,maybe I will have one if not I will return to work cause there is something more I have to protect and that is my SANITY and that is more important then my foot! I just can no longer keep this charade up. I want to wear a sign around my neck that says < please do not ask about my foot , unless u are willing to hear the truth> and even then dont you people get tired of people pretending they want to know , they dont care they just want u to be better so they dont have to hear it anymore. SO ok here I am and life is the pits today so what else is new? My basement flooded as the rain and the darn sump pump didnt work thrill I have laundry in piles now soaked with muddy water and well again I could go on and whine but I have had a good scream now and a cup of coffee so now time to tackle one of the problems the basement mess! Brian I am sorry , if I sounded off I am ashamed maybe I should delete this but then again no if people get mad at me I deserve it. I sound like a a very ungrateful little baby,I just cant seem to help myself ,I am sorry, and I dont even have anonomity here either as so many friends I have told about this site so they are looking to! Who wants there life a open book with co workers . Well maybe the day will get better in any case I do apoligize for the outburst! oh wonderful I just knocked coffee all over to ,I better go hide as today is not going to be my day!

Mary,

I posted my note about PT before reading futher and seeing your problem with fever and chills. I am not a doc, but that does sound like an infection. If this is the case,I would not recommend massage or physical therapy until the infection calms down. I hope all goes well for you today at the doctor's.

john h on 6/11/01 at 09:27 (050435)

for some months after my foot surgery my foot would swell up like a balloon and look purple by the end of the day. scared me! ice and elevation and time and it went away.

Re: Big caffine rush !!!

BrianG on 6/11/01 at 09:32 (050436)

Tammy, Tammy, Tammy, you been drinking that espresso again!!! :*)
You are so very close to healing, I just don't want to see you set your self back, just because you feel you need to go back to work. Your obviously healing, as you can now walk on your heels during the day. Thats a start. But, what is your body telling you at night? It's saying 'Tammy, we're almost there, but not quite. Thats why I'm keeping you up at night, just as a reminder'.

I'm telling you, I regret every day that I went back to work when I did. I just don't want to see you joining my club. You might think you can just work through the pain, but if it changes and starts going the other way, like mine did, you'll be reaching around and kicking yourself in the butt !!!! Go ahead, take it out on me. I can take it !!! You NEED more time off work and I'll be here to keep reminding you :*)

Re: Tammie-My friend!!

Mary S. on 6/11/01 at 10:15 (050442)

Tammie, Tammie- Brian and John are right!!!!! Don't go back to work yet!!You I know what it is like dealing with this--even though I am not as far along. Pain takes a huge toll on the mind. If you go back and the foot gets worse, and the pain is worse, think how that is going to affect you.
Have you thought about seeing another doctor, another specialist--orthopedic??
I am getting ready to go for my doctor's visit now. I don't feel well and could sleep the day away, but I am so anxious to get some answers.
Don't worry, I think today I'll get the help I need.
I wish I could be there and on my feet to help clean up the basement. Sometimes things get overwhelming, but, 'This Too Shall Pass'. You don't tackle that by yourself--get the children to come help.
Thank YOu for being so concerned about me. Now it is my turn to worry about you!! I'll be back in touch late today when we get back from my appointment--till then my friend--Get some rest--not too much caffeine.

Re: Tammy, don't rush it !!!

Laurie R on 6/11/01 at 11:54 (050450)

Hi Tammie , Ok my dear you are having a bad day..First of all ,all the people that think you should be healed have lost their minds or don't have any clue about foot surgery. It can take up to a year to heal. Dr.Z has said this more than once ..... Don't let anyone put this in your head that you should be all healed in just 8 weeks. We are heal differrent.
as for your job. You work on your feet all day long. I know you love your job and miss your patients ,I am sure they miss you also .. But PLEASE don't rush it. Here is why...

When I first hurt my foot (2 years ago) I continued to work for three months ..I would get off work crying and I could bearly drive home. I was a bartender ,no one at my job cared that I had a foot problem. So who suffers you do I do. I really think if I would of took the time off to heal in the begining I would not have the problems I have now. I may never be able to work again....

I care that is the only reason I am telling you this. Please think about things good and hard, once the damage is done their is no turning back. I would hate to see you like me Tammie ,you still have a chance to make things right ..Like you always say tomorrow is another day and it will be better for you.

Your post really made me sad ,and I am really sorry you are going through this .....E-mail me if you would like to vent anytime..

Just remember we all understand and we are here for you.

wendyn on 6/11/01 at 13:17 (050455)

Tammie - I am worried that you are not sleeping. I know you might not feel like you 'need' sleep - but your body needs the sleep to help you heal properly. Does the doctor know that you're still not sleeping?

Re: Sounding off

wendyn on 6/11/01 at 13:29 (050456)

Tammie - I don't think anyone will get mad at you, nor should they.

You are venting out a lot of anger and frustration - and that's a BIG part of what this board is for.

This is one of the few places we can go when everything gets to be too much and we get tired of trying to explain it to people who will NEVER UNDERSTAND.

Most of us have had to deal with the constant questions from 'well meaning' friends, and most of us have found that the less you say the better.

My standard answer to the 'How are your feet?' is 'Been worse'. It's honest and doesn't encourage discussion. Sometimes I'll use a 'Some days are good - some days aren't'. answer too. I very rarely try to explain to people what is wrong with them, and I do so only if I figure that they have the intelligence to understand - and that they're asking out of genuine compassion/concern. If people see me limping and say 'Feet sore' I say 'Yep' and keep going.

Honestly - it makes my life a WHOLE lot easier. It helps keep me focused on everything else and not just my feet.

I want you to know that what you're going through is really common (the feelings) and that you are doing the best thing for yourself by coming here and dumping it.

Re: Re:wendyn

tammie on 6/11/01 at 20:24 (050480)

Hi, thanks for the compassion, I do feel sad that i acted like a baby, was a badddd day! And coming off very little sleep my patience is low. Yes I had told my dr. about the sleep problem, he said it is my fault as my foot is being over used! Said to do less and would get better! He may have een right, but there are days when i did very little and my foot still would wake me up with like jolts just like someone shocked me , or it would feel numb and I would have to get up with it and walk till it felt better, sometimes I wake up with a throbbing burning pain like it is on fire, I have heard a million times this is normal and I try to accept that but it sure can be hard when you are lacking sleep and I myself have tried some medications to help like the script sonato (hubby has that one) I tried the excedrin pm with the sonato, tried ultram with each of the others and although I may get some rest I still wake up to tend the foot ( not a baby) but it seems as though it is a baby sometimes every 2 hours. I have had good and bad with my pods, somedays they are great and other days they are like dont bother me you are done now. I dont want any battles I just want to finish the treatment and move on without them! They dont HEAR when I say pain or it is not where u said it is they nod and say yes it is healing good just listen to your body and I feel if I hear that one more time I may scream insanely! FOR how much longer do I have to listen to my body and what is he going ot tell me in 2 weeks when I return? It is not 100% yet I know this I can feel it, but he told me I would be able to return to work after that appt. and will I be able to ? If I had to today I know I could never work 8 to 10 hrs no way no way,but when? Well 2 more weeks for miracles lol, I am resuming my humor and I told myself I would not tell anyone about my foot again and here I am whining to u! I have read allot of your posts and trust your judgement and I even think u straightened me out a time or 2 lol, I guess I am thick skulled I am sorry , I cannot state this enough ,who would ever know what the feet can do to a person and there life never ever would I have known it could be this way! I would have taken care of my feet and never wore those cheepo shoes to work or ran around with flat sandels, I am very flat footed with not much arch and flat things always felt good!Well this is much to long and i will quit now! Thanks again and I hope that you had a better day!!!

Good luck.
