Ankle Injury

Posted by Bob.H on 6/28/01 at hrmin (051773)

Hi,

I was involved in a automobile accident in December of 1992,
where I was driving & we were in collision with a Semi-trailer
truck from behind in winter whiteout conditions.
I was x-rayed & it was diagnosed as a severe rupture of the
ligaments of my right ankle as well as extreme soft tissue damage.
I also had a fracture of the lateral malleolus at the tip of the
tibia , tearing off about a 3/4 ' tip of the bone. This injury required
surgical repair and months of rehab. Almost 1 year after the injury
I was still having extreme pain & was further tested with a tomogram.
This revealed that the titanium screw used to attach the bone &
ligament to tibia had broken in two & as a result the piece of bone
had basically died. this test also revealed many fragments floating
around the largest being the size of a mans pinky nail.
I was then booked for Orthoscopic surgery which lasted 2 & 1/2 hours
& was origianlly only planned for 1/2 hour due to the extensive damage
and scar tissue. The ortho re-attached the ligament & removed the
fragments , from the time I injured the ankle till the time I returned
to work full time was just under 2 years,as I have a job where I am
always on my feet.I still suffer extreme pain daily in the talar dome
region & limp noticely. I must wear a figure 8 ankle brace and sock
to keep the swelling under control. I take anti-inflamation drugs as
well as pain killers on a regular basis.
Does anyone have any helpful suggestions as the doctors tell me all
they have left is to fuse the ankle.

Yours Truely
Bob H

They do have ankle implant that have been around for about ten years. Only a hand full of doctor's have FDA approval to do this procedure. Can be very effective.
