Tsk tsk to me

Posted by wendyn on 7/10/01 at 13:35 (052677)

The monkey bar thing really was fairly innocent. It was a nice day, and I really didn't think it would be a big deal to join in the fun. My shoulders are somewhat better today - but I'm amazed at how the body ages when you're not looking. Didn't seem like a big thing 20 years ago...when was the last time you heard an 8 year old complaining that they over did it at the park?

Could be that gate theory helping my shoulders today too....

I went for a LONG walk (for me) Saturday night - a good 20 to 30 minutes straight walking at a good pace.

Did the same thing Sunday night - probably between 30 and 45 minutes at a good pace. Thought about how much better I am and how wonderful it is to have the freedom to walk again!!! How exciting! I don't think I'd walked that far in over two years!

Yesterday I started getting some pain behind my right knee - then by last night it was burning right through my TT area into my toes and heel - and right up the back of my thigh into my middle back. Kept me up until I finally hobbled out of bed and took some kids Motrin (about all I can tolerate). Today I'm walking like I had a rough day bull riding (we have a big rodeo on here and I keep getting comments about being bucked off a bull...real funny the first time but after that it's just annoying - especially since I heard the same wise cracks last year during the Stampede).

So, the moral of my little story here is that it's a good idea to push your limits once in a while...you'll never know unless you try (and you know that walk was SO enjoyable it was almost worth this). But it REALLY sucks when you push yourself past the point of what you can do. I know that it should just be a couple days to get over this - but I hate the reminders that things are likely to never be the way they should be.

I want all of you to come to my house right this minute for a get-rid-of-a-bad-day party! Let's see, we'll start with chocolate. (of course!), then we'll move on to the main course, chocolate. We'll have dessert (chocolate) while watching 'Gone With the Wind'......we'll be so disgusted with that sissy Scarlett that it'll be obvious how strong we are even on a bad day! Just imaging HER in an MRI tube! I mean really, do you think she'd be able to kick off her button-ups and swing from some monkey bars? Of course not - she's a wimp! And just imagine HER dealing with a double dose of pain AND Workman's Comp in the same breath! Oh, and let's not forget what we could do with that beautiful scoundrel, Rhett.......:)

ellen w on 7/12/01 at 08:30 (052931)

Hi Necee, and Tammie too,
Thank you so so much. My bad day was work related, not pain related. I'm the point person (means I'm the grunt that does the writing work) on a major accreditation report for my college, and a last minute request from our president had me working into the wee hours. Got home at 2 am only to find 'lobotomy boy' , aka my neighbor, playing his stereo. It wasn't loud, but the bass just was going thud, thud, thud through the wall until 4 am. Then I had to be up and alert for an early morning meeting. This new drug I am on, Mobic, is working well for me, otherwise I would have really been in trouble.

Any electronics wizzes out there with advice on how to block a neighbor's stereo, or to tell him how he should place his speakers?

Anyway, I hope you are doing well,
ellen

I suppose you could ask him to be more considerate at 2am - but then again I suppose you've already tried that.

Is the report finished now? Will you get some time off in lieu?

Enjoy the sunshine!

Oh , I feel for you, I have no help to offer as I have teens also who unfortuantly like that thud thud thud base what they call music yuck and hard on our heads and ears! I am sorry I have no advice except maybe a friendly talk with him and a compromise! I a laughing at your discription of the boy tho lol it was very funny and had a good laugh! We live in country so many feel they may blast there well what they deem is music loudly and we have a lot of amish here and they can be the worse,as they (teens ) go in there buggy down road throwing there beer bottles in lawns and blare the cd players and weave the roads till wee hours of am, and rarely do you see or hear a officer arrest them! I get angry as it does not seem fair! I wake up with beer cans and beer bottles in my lawn !I once said I was going to put a garbage can there on sat. night but hubby says they would not use it anyways! So good luck with your teen next door and hope that the headache has a chance to clear!

ellen w on 7/12/01 at 17:05 (052971)

Hi Julie, Hi Tammie
Yes, many many conversations, and he only began to be more considerate after I complained several times to building management. This was after one month straight in which he either blasted the stereo so loud my bed was vibrating, hammered on the wall, used his electric drill which sounded like a jackhammer, played electric guitar, had friends over watching porn flicks and yelling whoo whoo whoo at the top of their lungs, and bounced tennis balls against the walls -- all usually between 2:00 and 6:00 am when he gets home from cruising the NY clubs.

Since I live in an L-shaped studio, I have limited architectural possibilities on where I can move my bed. I've lined the wall with acoustic foam and put floor to ceiling bookcases with glass doors against this wall, and STILL I hear all of this.
At least he doesn't smoke cigars or have a yappie dog!

And of course, he thinks I'm the old fart with the problem.

This guy is not a teenager. He's one of these Wall Street whizkid types, who is burning the candle at both ends, and unfortunately, it's my wick that's getting burned. So to speak.

Ellen--

I called in a noise complaint to the police one night when my neighbors were playing their music incredibly loud. That was back when I lived in an apartment. I don't know if the NY cops are too busy for that sort of thing, but it might scare him into behaving himself.

Good luck!

A friend of mine (who is very unassertive but also very clever) had noisy neighbors upstairs. She went out and bought a most annoying tape of whale songs. If the neighbors played loud music late into the night, she woke up real early and cranked up the whale songs. Played them all morning.

Re: Ear plugs

Julie on 7/13/01 at 01:42 (053006)

Ellen, have you tried ear plugs? The best ones are the waxy Quies, made in France but widely available here in England and perhaps in the States too. They obliterate most noise - whether they'd be effective with a thumping bass I don't know, but would be worth a try.

Re: Ear plugs

Julie on 7/13/01 at 02:00 (053010)

Ellen, I did a Google search and came up with several websites. Try http://www.cassell-wood.com/boulquiesear.html .

Or to investigate them all, key in 'Quies ear plugs' (just 'Quies' brings up a whole lot of Spanish sites).

Re: Ear plugs

ellen w on 7/13/01 at 08:59 (053028)

Thanks Julie,
I've tried ear plugs, and don't like they way they feel, but maybe these will be different. I've also thought about checking out a gun store (no, not for that!!!) for ear protectors, but don't know if you can sleep with them. I might do the noise back routine (though part of me thinks it bad karma to retaliate and it will come back to haunt me). I have bought a 'sound machine' --one of those devices that's supposed to put you to sleep with calming sounds, but found that that keeps me up. It does have one nifty sound track of rainforest sounds, which I love because it reminds me of a trip that I took to the Amazon rainforest in Peru, with birds thumping in the bushes and rain dripping off banana palm leaves. Set very loud, right next to our common wall, it might definitely get his attention!
Thanks, all

I've never been in this guy's apartment, so I don't know what his set up is. Don't think I want to visit either. One late night I went over and knocked on his door, and he answered wearing a lavender feather boa. I don't think I was who he was expecting!
