Heel Pain in 12 year old

Posted by Gina S. on 8/16/01 at 12:05 (056899)

Dear Doctor, My 12 year old son (5'7', 225 lbs.) has been complaining of heel pain for over a year. He is very active in baseball and football and plays sports daily for about 7 months a year. About a year ago we saw a sports doctor who diagnosed him with tendentious starting at the knees and down through his feet. He took anti-inflammatory pills and did stretching but it didn't do much to relieve his heel pain. Is it possible to have a heel spur at his age? Both my dad and brother have had them.

It sounds like he has apophysitis. This is where the achilles tendon attaches to the back of the heel pain. Due to the area of the attachment still developing there is a pulling at this area. Many time there is a biomechanical abnormality in the way he walks. This needs to be evaluated by a podiatrist. I treat this specific problem every week. Must also rule out with an x-ray an diplacement and or fracture of the growth plate. So get this check out.
