chronic heel pain

Posted by Sara E. on 8/27/01 at 13:10 (058109)

Approximately 5 years ago, I fractured my left heel. Shortly thereafter, a bone spur had developed. I received approximately 14 cortisone injections and several different nsaids over a 4 year period from an ortho surgeon. He changed my dx from heel spur to plantar fascitis. He sent me to foot/ankle specialist who casted my foot for 2 months and then performed a EPF. I have more pain than before and have tried orthotics, more anti-inflammatories, walking casts, Elavil and still no relief. He has suggested another plantar release and a possible nerve release. The pain I have radiates around my heel on the bottom and along the side of my foot. I also experience pain when I get up in the morning and it gets progressively worse throughout the day, not totally normal to PF. I just want to chase after my children again. Any helpful ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A lot of potential issues here--recommend a second opinion. What was the location of the fracture? I would be hesitant to consider another plantar fascial release if you did not get results from the first one.

My fracture was located on the ball of the calcaneus, the spur is approximately 1' in length and was not removed during my EPF. My surgeon has suggested a full release and is considering a tarsal tunnel release. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this?
