5 weeks post op...infection caused a hole....still no PT....Dr. Z or Dr. Ed...could this cause more scar tissue to form??

Posted by CindyF on 8/29/01 at 06:27 (058323)

Well guys...I'm at 5 weeks post op now ...and infection I had at the surgical site has now created a small hole...approx 2.5cm diameter by 1.5 cm depth...
I have been applying panafil for a week....it seems to have debreided the infected tissue...now it seems to be going deeper....
This has really slowed my recovery progress down alot....because I have not been allowed to bear weight yet...
Will this allow scar tissue to form???
I try to keep my foot elevated....but I have life going on around me...and I have to get moving around...and when I allow my foot to be down....it swells up like a balloon....besides....I'm getting very frusterated at having to sit either in the recliner or the wheelchair...with my foot up on pillows...I'm going nuts...*L*
I'm going to see my Ortho this afternoon....I'm hoping at least some PT could be started...
Would it hurt to start PT with this small wound?
I know with the PT I could start applying weight...then the swelling would diminish....
Also...after I apply the panafil to my wound site...I have pain for hours....it feels like strong electrical pain....going from the wound site..(which is the lower part of the TTS incision)...and going down to the bottom of my heel...and is intermittant every few seconds...and then having an icepick ram in my heel....it so bad the pain pill doesn't work unless I take a second one...which I worry about...because I have gone through 2 prescriptions since the surgery....and I am not one to take pills like this...which is about 80 pills...Lortab 7.5...
But the pain get's so bad sometimes...that I just want to cry....
Is there something I could request from the Dr. that might help with this pain that maybe isn't a narcotic...
Just looking for a little releif...
Thanks
CindyF

Hi Cindy,

Your doctor is giving you the Lortab for for a reason, you have pain. Take them. You are like most people and don't like to take pain pills. All I can say is why suffer when you have the proper meds? There are many people that would give almost anything to have a prescription like yours. You are not going to become an addict for taking a prescribed amount of meds. I doubt there is much out there that will work better than what you have, especially if your still in pain. So what if you have to take two of them, just be honest with your doc. Good luck on the healing.

Panafil is a good product--use it a lot.
Most physical therapists can do some lmited wound care---I am strongly in favor of physical therapy after the type of surgery you have had.

Cindy,
I also ended up with infection in the incision site and had a hole. It just finally healed up a week or two ago, my surgery was May 14. It did take along time to heal but I did not notice to much scar tissue. I did not use anything special on it, just peroxide and some TAO. I did notice more scar tissue on the other incision where the sutures were not dissolving and they were pushing out through the incision. Take the meds if they help and feel lucky that your doctor gave you something. All I was told to take was Ibuprofen, I think it helps with the swelling but doesn't touch the pain. My heel has not hurt much at all just once in a while I feel a sharp pain. If your pain is like you describe only after the panafil I myself would not use it.
I have pain on the lateral side of my foot, the older doctor told me I have cubiod syndrome (lateral column syndrome). He mentioned that it was from the infection. The younger one who did the surgery said that my problem was my inserts were not fitting correctly. I think that my foot has gotten wider after the surgery and that they may not fit right and probably caused the cuboid syndrome. I had Pt for 4 weeks just finished it up but the only thing it helped was the heel, which is great. I just wish something would help the other, the doctor did take the inserts to have them fixed it will take 2-3 weeks. But he didn't do anything else for the pain except to tell me to take the Ibuprofen, that I told him was not touching the pain. I have decided he's a quack. I will start work on the 3rd and hope for the best if it gets to bad (the pain) I will go and see the older doctor and see if he will do something I will probably go back on resrictions if I can't do my job on Monday.
I hope your recovery goes better than mine. Good luck.

Stephanie....
I hope you are able to go back to work and be pain free.....I know how it feels to want this.
Thanks for your kind words...
I feel I have to trust my Ortho for a little while...but if this infection continues to get worse...and he won't try other options...I have no other option except to get a second oppinion or to see a wound specialist.
Good Luck in the future.
