P.F./horsetrainer

Posted by Rachael T. on 9/25/01 at 22:58 (061596)

As a prof. horsetrainer, I walk in sawdust footing in an indoor riding arena, as well as a brick aisleway in stable area...I also ride several horses thru the day, putting pressure on balls of my feet in the stirrups/irons. Yes, I know these things are negatives for the dreaded P.F. Now, since my competitive show season is complete, I am tryingto rest more. I've been dealing w/ this since April 1st - I've had several cort. injections, stretching, ice, massage, vioxx, celebrex, naprosyn, & orthotics - I WANT to get well; my work needs me & I need my feet! I am wondering what the prognosis is for me in order to return to riding full force & when?

Rachael, are you wearing your riding boots when you are walking around durring the day? I have noticed that the riding boots I have seen are very flat on the inside and do not offer any arch support. If that is the case, it could be the standing and walking that is doing more damage than the riding. Dr. B.

Horsetrainer, in a word, ' tape' can solve your problem.

Re: when i tried tape i got tendonits above the tape line

paula on 9/26/01 at 17:08 (061659)

scott or anyone, any ideas? did i tape wrong? how to prevent this?

Paula it's really difficult to talk about taping with only text. What tape line? What tendon?

THANKS TO ALL WHO ADVISED ME - & my question is for you Scott.....Do I need to tape in a.m. & stay taped? And, is taping going to be necessary forever or in time, will this heal? I am also wondering about the taping method.....which method is best?
A local pod. taped me for healing (no pun!) purposes a while back which I though was wonderful - there were 2 1/4'+ sponges under the taping on my arch & bottom of my foot - giving my p.f. support as well. Would this be feasible daily? Is there an elastic type appliance sold that possibly supports both the arch & the heel area as well? Thanks again!

Yes, Dr. B - I was wearing riding boots (Ariats & Tony Lamas) thru the day in the barn....I must also say too, that I added a tread mill program to my agenda about 4 mos. prior to this foot problem onset. When riding, I don't suffer any pain - it is after the day's end -- but this could be from the total day's activity of walking in the barn in boots - & what I think is most problematic is the uneven sawdust in the riding arena....horse footprints & such that I walk 'into' cause extreme pain when walking & then, again, after the day's end. Thank you for your prompt reply & concern!

I am not yet ready to consider surgery as I understand that conservative treatment is a plus; and I understand that surgery is a long term rehab time ...... thus, my reason for a negative opinion on it. ~ Thanks for your info anyway.

OOPS! I made an error in reading your note -- you were referencing me to look into Elec. Shock Wave Treat, not surgery. Yes, I think that is what I will do once I've completed all conservative measures; as well as take some time off from the barn work - hoping that an r & r will be beneficial to support my healing. Thank you again & sorry for my misunderstanding.

yes it's hard o explain without pictures. wherever the tape ends , anywhere , and the skin begins, there is a constant tug. this is the same tug from the tightness that i suppose is always aggravating my pf and creating tendonitits. my pt thinks it's from tight fascia everywhere and she has diagnosed me with myofascial syndrome. anyone try taping and get tendonitis around edges wherever tape ends and skin begins? any other theories or ideas how i can tape and avoid this? the frustrating part is that the taping really helps with the pf and even the tendonitis within the taped area (while creating new and worse tendonitis just outside the taped area) maybe the only solution is to tape up like the mummy. i'm tempted.
