Thank God I found this board...

Posted by Mahatmelissama on 10/05/01 at 15:29 (062319)

I get tears in my eyes reading some of the posts here. You see, I have chronic foot pain and I have been trying
to 'grin and bear it' since NOBODY I mean NOBODY understands. Some of my friends just tell me, well meaning,
to 'lose weight' since I am very overweight. I am losing weight and longing that that will solve my foot problems.

I have pain in my arch...sometimes spreading up my calves (feels tight) and to my hip. I am only 34, too young for this!
I have taken to excersize 6 days a week...3 days of 20 minutes of walking, 3 days of strength training (with free little
dumb-bell weights). The pain GETS WORSE, not better.

I prefer clogs since I have mildly high arches. I have very pretty feet (don't mean to be stuck up) but I would give
anything to have COMFORTABLE feet with less dainty arches. I have little ankle and WIDE feet, my toes are
spread apart.

Since I have been to many doctors for many things..I find doctors are not cure alls...they are detectives and sometimes
it is good to just read up on topics.

I don't have a freezer to store ice for using ice..stretching seems to HURT my arch...I am trying to break in
my alznner's I just purchased last Saturday. Some people have had extreme relief from them, others not.

My friends and family don't understand...I actually have gotten to the point I shy away from men since my last
relationship was hampered by my foot pain (long story, will spare you). I don't even want to date until I get
a grip on this thing. I don't want to sing in front of church...did that for 3 years and was in pain EVERY SINGLE
time. One music minister argued with my for me to have a chair.

NOBODY UNDERSTANDS but people who have it. I think I have PF from what you all described.

Thanks for letting me vent. I am not only in physical pain, but emotional pain as well. In Scripture, Saint
Paul talks about a 'thorn in his side that God refused to remove so that he would be totally dependant
on the Lord' (my paraphrase)...well...may God be glorified by PF is MY THORN IN MY SIDE.

I need to have a better attitude. I am pushing too many people away..no one understands WHY I won't go on hikes
with them...shopping with them....etc...

This is hampering my life.

I REFUSE to go to a doctor right now...I have had so many AWFUL doctors for other aliments and only a few semi-good
ones, I don't want to go through another set right now. My mother is a doctor, I have high respect for her profession...I am
just burnt out. I have so many various aliments unrelated to PF and want a break to going to doctors...which is why
I ended up at the Good-Foot store.

If anybody wants to write me, write my at stucknd80s@yahoo.com . I am sorry to rant on and on..but what a relief to
cast this burden to you all.

God bless.

FIRST stop the weight bearing exercise immediately!!! This could REALLY be making you worse!!!
You are causing strain to the bottoms of the feet....causing all kinds of problems. Lord how long have you had this pain????? 34 is too young but there are children that get this awful problem as well so you're not alone and you're not to young to get it.
Take a deep breath and take a break. You need to find a doctor. A doctor that understands and will HELP you and go the distance whatever it takes.
In my limited experience I have to say that is the most important thing.
Second STAY active on this board and keep in touch with the rest of us sufferers. It will help the emotional part. We will be your support group but you have to stay in touch with us.
We do understand...so don't feel so alone.....just come back.
Make a foot journal...I have found this to be the most helpful so far in finding proper treatment. Start with the very first day you remember feeling the pain and go from there....write down the things you have done and the doctors you have seen. Get doctors records mailed to you or faxed to the doctor you find. BUT get an appt. and go to the doctor. Where do you live? Where do you work...standing job or not?
You are on the right track by finding us....keep in touch.
Iam sending this to your email as well....you seem pretty upset as we all are when we are in chronic pain all the time....hang in there.

If you read there posting you will know that they are a few of the very best around, caring and really trying to help in any way that they can!Not all Drs. are bad or uncaring or unfeeling, you must find one that will work with you to find the answers to help you and your feet. As you have expieranced this type of problem is not very well understood by most.

Which is very hard on you and any one else who is expierancing this. Please know that you are in a very good site a life saving one at times as it offers you hope that there will be a life left. You can vent you can cry you can question and you can be comfortable here and we understand.

Tammie and Carmen,

Thank you both for your caring msgs. I just reset my yahoo.com e-mail account...I am sorry it bounced back today.
Please resend you msgs.

I hate going to doctors, so any advice you can give me would be good. Where can I find Scott's book?

Thanks again.

Tammie on 10/05/01 at 19:31 (062344)

Look up above and see where it says PF Book click on it and read away!

You do know most don't like dr.s, that is kinda normal heheh! But really some are very good and some have the best kind of help and info you could want. Please give it a chance, maybe one that posts here is in your area, from what I have read in there postings I would not hesitate to see one of them, in fact I wish there were many more like them . I think in order to get the best possible care you will have to find a partner to help (Dr) maybe a PT that you trust can help find you a good one.

Where are u from? Many here will give good dr.s they have found in there area. Well good luck and I hope you found the book above you may have to click on The all pain categories first then it will give many things to look at .Good luck

Thanks Tammie...read his story...very interesting!

I also am relieved to see it is hindered by weight since I am losing weight,
albeit a very slow rate.

I do my weights at home and do not stand much to do them, very careful on my feet.

I walk in sneakers. For some reason, while walking, I do not have much pain...it is STANDING
that is painful. Sometimes I get soreness in my calves and ankles..but to lose weight, I must
walk.

I have some orthos I am trying to break in. I am now also starting to take my pain reliever (something
prescribed for my headaches that has basically acetophin (can't spell), barbitiate (can't spell) and
also a caffeine. It relaxes the muscle spasms and does not impare my driving or preformance. It
helped with my achy spastic arch today.

When I am totally relaxed (not stressed) I notice I am not in as much pain. I also will try to wear my sandles
around the house.

I am in the Silicon Valley (40 miles South from SF). I may consider doctors if I must, but reading Scott's story has
been the story of my life with all the various aliments I have had.

Thanks for your support and have a great weekend.

I know this sounds corny but just knowing I am not alone is such a comforting feeling.

not like to give out my surname...and no one else has that particular nickname on the internet)

Hi Melissa --

My suggestions are:

1. Get a definite diagnosis. I suggest SPORTS MEDICINE. Ask the practice if they have a foot injury specialist.

2. Stop the weightbearing exercises & 20 minute walks until you're sure whether or not it's PF.

3. If it is PF, be sure to get a comprehensive treatment plan, including: evaluation for possible orthotics or Birks, possible PT, massage/icing, etc. An NSAID may or may not be appropriate depending on other meds, etc.

Bottom line: please don't wing it! You CAN get better but you will need a definite diagnosis & solid treatment plan.

My best to you & please stay with us............Steve

Hi Mahat,

About the ice, do you have any kind of freezer, even a small one? I use small bags of grocery store peas for my heels. When I'm done, I just chuck them back into the freezer. Would you like to read a little more on pain? It's such a complex subject. A good place to start is http://www.pain.com Good luck

I am truly sorry to read of your pain and frustrations! And, yes, it IS helpful to just be able to write it down and 'get it out' sometimes! This is a great place to do that! We all understand the suffering and the set-backs and give one another support.

You mentioned about not having freezer space to store ice. I wondered if you have a small freezing compartment in your refrigerator? If so, you can freeze water in a 20 oz. plastic coke bottle and use it over and over. I read here (and then my doctor told me also) to freeze ice in a bottle and roll it under my foot a couple of times a day. The way I understand it, both the ice and the rolling motion are helpful. When you're done, just put it back in the freezer for the next time.

I wish you well and hope for better times for you in the future! :-)
