sky troopers

Posted by scott r on 10/23/01 at 17:49 (063484)

I spent all day 300 feet in the air on top of the roof of a big boiler at a Mead paper plant near cloumbus GA watching groups of 20 to 30 jump out of C-130s flying over Ft. Benning. I must have watched 40 or 50 jumps. Always in the same spot and it took them 60 seconds to hit the ground from what I guess was around 1,000 feet, plus or minus 500. Hope that ain't secret information!

John -- I made two parachute jumps 25 years ago. First jump OK. Second jump hard landing.

End of career!

Steve

PS -- just THINKING of it now makes my feet hurt!

I cannot even watch anyone jump without getting queasy. My six year old jumped off a swingset, right on his heels and I almost fainted. B.

nancy: i do not know if you ever watche Survivor I but one of the things they had to do was stand on the 'edge' of a very narrow board until there was only one person standing. The winner was one off the girls. A PF person would have been the first one off.

fortunately i never had to jump out of a plane steve. i had my hands on the eject handle a couple of times in a jet when things looked bad. In a helicopter, you are usually flying around 1000 feet or less and if the engine quits you become a rock and will be on the ground in about 20 seconds. we did not even carry parachutes. i have picked up a number of pilots who have ejected, some with good results and some with not so good results. in our newer jets you can eject on the ground and make it.

John -- My 2 jumps were from 2800 & 3500 feet, both by static line.
BTW, I had a pilot friend tell me once that he never wanted to sport jump; he figured that if the time ever came to pull the handle, he didn't want to have 'used up' his good luck already!

for political reasons, i have to be silent about where i was yesterday that allowed me to take them. the view was 5 times better than the pictures show, some of them are at 260 feet in the air.
