I finally made an appt to see an Orthopaedic Surgery Doctor

Posted by Mahatmelissama on 10/26/01 at 19:41 (063662)

I looked through my HMO plan for a Podiatrist and then didn't have one listed...so I
made an appt with an Orthopaedic Surgeon. I did ask the secretary if she treat foot
pain and she said yes. I go on my birthday, 10/31.

I just wanted to say this board has been instrumental in me getting help for this.
I realised this is not going to go away by itself, I must be proactive.

Hi Mahat,

Just remember that a surgeon is going to probably want to cut. Is that what your looking for? If you look through the foot surgery board, you'll see many, many people who had surgery, that ended up much worse than before being cut. Do your homework, read Scott's book, and then get a second opinion. I had failed EPF surery, and I can't tell you how happy I was that I didn't have major complications.

Of course, on the other hand, some people are actually cured by surgery. Ask the doc for referrels of people he has cured. Good luck

i saw some orth surgeons and some podiatrists now i see a physiatrist (rehab doctor). just to let you know there's various ways to go. by the way, is the orth surgeon a foot and ankle specialist? i could have this wrong, pods, help me here, but i think foot and ankle orth surgeons study the foot and ankle for 6 months, pods study for years (?) , physiatrists don't necessarily specialize but help organize the rehabilition. orthotists with abc degrees actually go to college i think and also put in some years of study. i could have this all wrong but it would be good for someone who knows for sure to tell us here. it helps to decide who to pick for treatment maybe. this is the best i can do for details. attention deficit disorder and details don't mix too well.

foot and ankle specialists have at the very least a year's fellowship in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery they can do many surgeries that podiatrists are not qualified to do. a foot and ankle dr. did my surgery couldn't be happier. podiatrists saw me and would'nt touch me.

Cindy:

There are a number of podiatrists with 3 year residencies in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery, many with two year residencies. Please list some of the surgeries that you state 'podiatrists are not qualified to do.'

Well the one that I had none of them that I saw would touch. Removing a varicose vein with a almost half an inch tumor on it pressing on the lateral plantar nerve and that necessitated tarsel tunnel surgery as well as 22 stitches in my foot. Everyone I saw and that ended up being 9 drs. Only an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in foot and ankle reconstruction 55 miles away from my house said yes I can help you. Everyone else said sorry go home. Deal with it.
