Saw orthopedic doc today... getting referred to rhuematologist

Posted by Beverly on 11/28/01 at 13:32 (065505)

I braved the weather and saw my orthopedic doctor today. I'm so glad I did.
I almost didn't make the appointment, because I didn't see what new idea he could offer that we hadn't already tried. (experiencing setback after a couple of months of improvement)

He said, 'The more I see you, the more convinced I am that you have a disorder involving the tendons, nerves, and circulation... and not just one thing.' He said that despite my completely normal bloodwork, he's sending me to a rheumatologist, because some rheumatological conditions don't show up in bloodwork. One reason he thinks circulation is involved is that my feet and calves get pink when sitting but go back to a normal color with elevation.

It is such a relief to know that he believes me. Last spring I tried to get the internist I was going to at the time to send me to a rhuematologist and was refused because my bloodwork was normal. ONe thing I've learned from all of this is not to take one doctor's opinion as the gospel even if he or she is a specialist.

I see my orthopedic doctor as an above average doctor because he is willing to read between the lines. He didn't blow me off because I have pain but normal MRI. He's still trying to help me get to the bottom of this.

The other reason I'm glad I went is that I was just about to get my orthodics adjusted to see if that would help my new problem (lateral pain at ankles). He said to leave them alone for now because the orthodics have helped my inner ankles so much that he doesn't want to run the risk of messing up that progress. (He watched me walk and didn't see me favoring the lateral side.)

I guess a have a little bit of extra hope that the rheumatologist might be able to help me decipher what underlying problems are about that are keeping my tendons from healing.

Thanks for reading this.

Dear Beverly , What a positive post ... I agree with you 100% not to take one doctor's opinion . Their is nothing wrong with as many as you can get to see if they all think you have the same thing .. I also think it is great you are going to see a Rheumatologist . Just because your MRI and your bloodwork came out ok does not mean their is nothing wrong with you . Their has to be something causing your pain ....

I had a tenogram done for my FHL tendon . They don't do this type of test to much . This is where they found the tenosynivitis in my tendon ... It was painful but I am glad I did it .

Don't ever give up keep the faith and you will get your answers ....

I will pray for you and keep you in my thoughts ...Please keep us posted ....

Thanks for all the well wishes. It is such a relief to have a doctor who believes me. That's half the battle. I won't know anything for a while since its going to take 2 or 3 months to get in to see the rhuematologist.

Thanks,
Beverly

Beverly,

I'm glad that you are going to see a rheumatologist now. Maybe he can figure out what is causing your pain. If he can't, maybe a neurologist can. I urge you to persist until you get a diagnosis that can explain your pain, and with any luck it will be a treatable condition.

Let's hope that this is the beginning of the end of your pain!
