Why is ESWT so expensive?

Posted by Nicole K. on 12/04/01 at 13:49 (066109)

I'm just wondering, what exactly about it is so expensive anyways? Is it the machines? Are docs trying to make $ to cover the cost of them, or is it expensive to run them or what? I was told it costs the provider $400 just to change electrodes... Is this true and why? Thanks for your thoughts on this...

Supply and demand. The FDA limits the supply of machines on the market in the US driving the price high. Manufacturers are standing in line waiting for FDA approval to introduce their units into the US. Doctors are standing in line waiting for access to those units. Doctors do not set the fees for the procedure.

You may want to check out the cost at the Bayshore ESWT Pain Clinic, Canada, http://www.bayshore.ca
Even with travel and accommodation cost it would probably still be lower than in the U.S.
