Reconstructive flat foot surgery

Posted by Joe B. on 1/14/02 at 06:58 (069948)

Well, I'm biting the bullet, after years of all the shots, corrective shoes and inserts, I'm having surgery on my right foot this Friday to correct my flat foot. It's been getting to the point where any extended standing just kills my foot and then I hobble around like a cripple. I'm told that I will be in a non-weight bearing cast for 4 weeks, then weight bearing for 2 weeks and then PT. My foot surgeon happens to be my cousin thru marriage and he is very optimistic about the surgery. I, on the other hand, have been a nervous wreck, thinking about what this will entail. I'm doing this to improve the quality of my life since my knees and hips are starting to bother me as well as a result of my flat feet.

If anyone is out there that just had some type of foot surgery, could you tell me how you calmed yourself before the surgery?? I'm really having a tough time trying to sleep. My primary wrote me a script for that new sleep aid that starts with 'A'. It helps, but I tend to wake up in the middle of the night. Thanks.

My friend, I understand your worry. I am to have surgery for PF, heel spur and possible posterior and tibial tendonitis in about two weeks......foot surgery is risky at best I beleive is the statement the specialist used.....I called my doc cause I am also taking ambien which I am assuming is what you are taking......I had to call him back though for the same reason of waking up and my jaws clenched so tight my face hurt.....he prescribed xanax temporarily for the anxiety....maybe you should try them in the lowest dosage just to take the edge off, it has helped me some......good luck to you and keep us posted as to how you are doing.......take care.......Pam B

Hi Pam,
Thanks for replying. I have to tell you that I chickened out on the elective surgery. There was too much pressure on me between the whole hospital and recovery ordeal and work. I snapped from all the pressure and decided against the surgery for now. I have talked with my cousin, the foot surgeon, and asked if there was anything that he could have prescribed to calm me down. He said there was, but I didn't know he could prescribe those type of medications. So now I'm beating myself up about my decision. My cousin said that I can do it anytime that I feel that I'm ready. I just have to convince myself. Could you send me your email address so we can email each other about the surgery?? Thanks.

Joe, I have included the email address above for your use but in case something goes wrong it is, (email removed).......I too understand what you are talking about.........this whole thing about elective surgery is bull........it is not elective in my opinion when you have suffered for years like I have and sometimes have to crawl to get from point a to point b.......I talked with my pod about this word elective??????? he looked at me like I had spots :) he told me he would not generalize his entire patient base.......he told me that most of the time it is elective, however, in cases like mine, he believes it is truly necessary......man, if you are hurting that bad, dont let anything stop you from trying to regain your life......I also went through this struggle with my back surgery decision and I am so glad that I made the choice to take the chance because if I had stayed the way I was I know I would be a cripple for life by now.......sometimes you just have to take a deep breath and go for it.......which is exactly what I am doing......I am being operated on next Wed........I am not looking forward to it, but I am looking forward to regaining the ability to live my life........I found a freind on the posting board and it has help me so much with all of this.......this is a great place because it gives us a place to vent as well as chat with others that have the same issues and can understand your anxiety.......I know how you feel, I have already had to quit my job because of this and I refuse to let this ailment ruin my life.......I told my pod, lets get on with it now......I am sorry you are struggling so much with this and I sure do understand.......feel free to email me anytime.......good luck
