Dr. Ed

Posted by D.Thomas on 1/16/02 at 13:30 (070201)

I have a question for you. I have been reading reports about a basketball player who plays center for a school here locally. The kid broke his foot about two years ago and they say the person that looked at it never fixed it correctly. They say the kid has necrosis and it will never heal and only get worse. The kid wants to play with either anti-inflammtories or pain killers but the doctors won't let him. What is 'necrosis' and what can somebody do about it?

This is Dr Z in for Dr. ED. This is where the bone and or joint has dead bone and or joint cells. This usually required surgery, bone stimulator and or bone graph. Which bone are they talking about. Another term used is non-union.

Hehe. That's fine with me. That would be cool if you two opened a practice together. I'll try and get some more info. They had said a specialist said surgrey wouldn't help because it is degenerative. I think it is one of the bones in the arch, but I'll try and find out some more info. It's kind of sad that this kid had a lot going for him and now will be lucky to walk in the future without pain.

D Thomas is that a kid from Michigan? I think you have noted in the past you are from the Grand Rapids area. At his age and that type of a bleak dx I would suggest he get to see 1 or 2 more opinions asap. That problem doesnt get better with age.

Avascular necrosis occurs when the blood supply to a bone is interrupted so all or part of a bone dies. Trauma can be a factor. Did the report state which bone it happened to?

I would love to be partners with Dr. Z. I grew up in New Jersey but my wife will not go east of the Rockies so Dr. Z would need to move west. He is probably happy where he is. It has been a while since I have visited family in NJ. I have traveled since 9/11 but have been a bit less willing for my family to do so.
