childs foot pains

Posted by Heather E. on 1/21/02 at 12:52 (070773)

My son is 5 years old and has extremely flat feet. We have seen a childrens podiatrist at AI Duponts childrens hospital in Wilmington Delaware. He was diagnosed as being extremly flexible and due to that it has streched the tendion in his foot and cause the arches to fall. He told me that short of surgury there is no treatment for him, and that surgery had only a 1 and 50 chance of working. He also said that this condition makes his ankles weak and more prone to injury. Well my son is very active and what I was wondering is if there is and exercises or stretches that he can do to make his ankles stronger? Thank you very much for your time in this matter.

Did his doctor provide a specific diagnosis? Orthotics are usually the gold standard for these types of problems and will work in most cases except for patients with 'vertical talus.'

Which tendon is stretched?? I would reason the posterior tibial tendon. If PT laxity is the problem, the entire foot should be braced with an orthotic. Strengthening of the PT tendon and associated musculature is accomplished with stress inversion exercise of the foot. I would consult a good physical therapist and get him into good, orthotics.
