I want to talk about RSD and getting foot surgery

Posted by DR Zuckerman on 3/17/02 at 21:08 (076689)

This has been on my mind for some time so I want to make sure you all understand my feelings about RSD and getting any additional foot surgery after you have ben diagnosed. RSD is a disease that only improves at best but never goes away

In my opinion and experience don't do it. RSD will only make the condition worse . I had a doctor tell me just recently RSD is like a magnet it will attract to any site that just had surgery. This was a pain specialist that told me this. I am not an RSD specialist but it makes sense and should be taken very seriouly . Any doctors on our site have an opinion abou this.

Hi Dr Z , I am so glad you brought this up . RSD is a very serious disease . As you know I have it . I have had 7 different spinel nerve blocks for it . I had my last one done last Thursday . When my Pod found out I had RSD by sending me to a specialist , he had me go for treatment with a pain management doctor .

What makes my case so very difficult is , I don't just have RSD , I also have PF and TTS and the tenosynovitis in my FHL tendon and a fibroma on my fasica that is wrapped around my tendon . The fibroma has grown and has become very painful .

My Pod has always been very conservative in his treatment . I have had a MRI and a Tenogram , x-rays and EMG , blood tests PT casts , fibar and cam walkers and air cast. We have tried almost everything . He has sent me to 5 different doctors for their opinions . They all say I am a very difficult case .

With RSD you are not suppose to stay inactived , but with all my other foot problems I am suppose to stay off my foot .

I will be having foot surgery real soon . He is going to take out my fibroma and do a TT release and a fascia release and clean out my FHL tendon . Now with this type of surgery as you know you are suppose to stay off the foot , but with the RSD I won't be able to stay off of it for to long . He said after about two weeks I will start to do some range of motion movements ... Then when the scar heals I will do PT .

This is the whole reason my Pain doctor is going to insert a epidural catheter in my spine through the skin of my stomach and out my side the day of surgery . The epidural will stay in for up to 6 weeks for the control of the RSD .

I agree with you that with surgery the RSD can get worse . But with me , I feel my two doctors are doing everything they can so this won't happen . As the last specialist said in his report , that my quality of life is quite poor and obviously I am a very complicated and unfortunate case with many things wrong with my foot.

Just think this all started with just PF ......

I want to thank you Dr.Z for bringing this up , it is so important people with foot problems understand that they can get RSD and it has to be treated early on for any chance at all......

Thanks again , Laurie R

I just want to talk to Laurie- I am fearful if the same thing is happening to me. I happened on chance to see RSD blurb in the local paper. It sounds so similar. I started with PF 5 years ago. If you can email me back Laurie, it would be great.
Thanks

I just came across your message board. I am interested in knowing if the surgery increased or decreased your RSD symptoms. If your RSD got better do you think it was a result of your surgery. I would like you opinion on surgery with RSD. Do you think RSD gets stuck in it's pain loop secondary to unresolved trauma? eg: an injury that has healed a fracture but signs of RSD reside in the limb.

Thanks for your ideas and input
