4 1/2 Months Post Tarsal Tunnel Patient

Posted by Shawn on 3/26/02 at 15:25 (077621)

I will try to make this short. I fell in a 18 inch hole at work when the ground was flooded. I had an MRI and EMG done. The EMG doc said I had torn the fibers within the casing of my nerve and that it would heal itself in the next year. I would have returned to work but the pain was so bad in my foot that I could hardly walk. Dr.Smith (orthopedic surgeon) told me I had TTS. Dr.Smith said that blood had ran down the nerve canal forming scar tissue. Surgery proved him right. He extracted a large piece of tissue from my right foot and said that the scar tissue had balled up the nerve.
The surgey was 11-16-01 and I started PT the second week of Jan, 2002. When I started PT Dr.Smith perscribed steroids and I was already taken Ibuprofren and Vicodin. The first three weeks of PT went well with little pain. For four weeks after that my condition got worse. Swelling was apperant; shooting pains and stabbing pain was more frequent. I went back to Dr.Smith when he then perscribed Celebrex, steroids, Ketocam 10/1% TDS and gave me a shot of Cortisone. The next three weeks my condition remained the same. Then for 8 days after that my condition improved and now I'm back to square one. I'm do to see Dr.Smith 4-04-02. The swelling , shooting pain, stabbing pain and electric shocks are back. I have a bruise on the upper half of my approx. 6 inch scar that gets darker when I stand or walk for too long (which isn't long). During my last visit to Dr.Smiths' office he said that on this next visit that he is either going to have to do exploritory surgery or refer me to a pain specialist. I guess my questions are these. Is this normal? Is the bruising common and does it normally last this long? Is it possible that another sugery will cure me? What would you recommened?
Thank You for your time.
