ESWT treatment by Bayshore Clinics in Canada

Posted by Sunny Jacob on 3/29/02 at 19:21 (078005)

It is my understanding that the purpose of this valuable space is to provide first hand experience from those patients who had treatment at various ESWT clinics in USA and Canada. However, recently the proliferation of issues such as the pros and cons of national health care, personal attacks and cost analysis of an ESWT clinic have taken up most of the message board. Some of the messages contain, probably unintentionally, misleading messages to the reader about Bayshore's treatment, equipment and fees.

Treatment Protocol:
(A Bayshore proprietary treatment protocol)
For various cases of joint tendinitis, including PF, our recommended treatment always has been Low Energy ESWT with multiple treatment sessions, using ultrasound imaging to pinpoint the treatment location. This treatment is anaesthetic free. Our candidates are patients with minimum 3 to 6 months chronic pain who have undergone 1st line of treatment. By applying ESWT and LILT (low intensity laser therapy) on alternate days, we create an acute condition using ESWT and then speed up the healing process with low intensity laser application. This procedure requires substantially more therapist(and patient) and equipment time. However, the results are highly satisfacory.

Equipment:
For this procedure (Low Energy ESWT)any of the reputable ESWT equipments on the market such as Dornier, Siemens, Storz, Wolf, etc., can be used. We currently use Siemens Sonocur. It is the policy of Bayshore's Clinical Division not to endorse any particular manufacturer. At any given time we use the best equipment available for the best price on the market.

High Energy ESWT:
We have recently added a new, specialized service using ESWT: - treatment of non-union of fractures. For this purpose we use high energy Ossatron. The procedure is performed by a team of orthopedic surgeon, anesthesist and ESWT therapist.
If a patient insists, we can also provide single treatment of PF using the high energy Ossatron. However, as mentioned above, for best results we recommend the Bayshore combination therapy with low energy ESWT / LILT (low intensity laser therapy).

Cost of treatment:
Our fee schedules are fixed and capped. When a prospective patient calls, our Therapist will provide all the details, including treatment fees in writing, prior to the patient's arrival at the clinic. As an additional service to our out-of-town clients we recommend nearby hotels that will provide a corporate rate for Bayshore ESWT patients. The patient pays directly to the hotel.
In all cases, the client will know the exact total cost in US $ prior to booking treatment with us. Similarly, all Canadian clients will be provided with exact cost information in Canadian Dollars.
The fee for bilateral treatment is substantially higher than for unilateral as it requires twice the therapy and equipment time.

Specialist Consultation:
If a patient requires telephone or personal consultation with our orthopaedic surgeon prior to booking a treatment, this can be arranged through our ESWT Therapist.

I hope I have clarified most of the issues that may have been unclear. For further information please contact us by email at (email removed) Although it is not my intention to participate regularly in the discussions on this site, I am happy to assist if information is needed that is not already available from our website http://www.bayshore.ca or through our ESWT Therapist.

Sunny: I appreciate your detailed information. We wish more providers would be forthcoming. Of course misinforation has a tendacy to spread on internet boards and we the patients are always searching for the most current information available. Most of us on this board have chronic cases of Plantar Fascia and have tried almost every conceivable treatment from surgery to ESWT. Many have been to Canada and people on the board have been in the U.S. FDA studies, been treated with the OssaTron,Or------,Sonnocur.Dornier Epos, and others. Most of the persons on this board are much more informed about PF and treatments available than your average person that has not been exposed to information available here. You have made a valuable contribution.

Concerning your remarks about being off subject I think you are off the mark. Healthcare and needs go beyond treating just the body it also includes treating the spirit and soul. Some of our board members are in wheelchairs, suffer depression and anxiety, have lost their jobs, and face severe obstacles in regaining their former lives. Many find this board as a place to vent and for many it is the only place to find people who understand the pain they are faced with. Yes, we get off topic and sometimes fight among ourselves but this board is more than just an encyclopedia of facts. Their exist here a certain brotherhood and sisterhood who want to help each other. I do hope you will keep us informed of your latest technology and offer us anything that might help. I have talked to your represenatives on the phone and received prompt replies to my email concerning your treatment and cost. I am also considering having your treatment on both feet. You answered a question I had on Laser Thearpy so thank you.
