Carman Where I live in PA. there are so few doctors to choose from. The area where he works in the hospital has a bad reputation. His private practice is only 5 miles from here, the hospital is 14.

Maybe you should look outside of your area...I have travelled to 7 doctors total in the Atlanta area...some taking meas long as an hour and half to get to. I would go whereever you have to...don't stop now or you'll wish you had continued to fight for yourself later on....
good luck!

Carman What are you supposed to do when doc won't give referral? I wanted to go to Pittsburg to UPMC.

I am not a doc nor do I work for an insurance company...BUT I have been in the spot where the referring doc was questioning my need for a specialist.
What did I tell them to get my referral?
'That's fine if you don't think I need a specialist....so here's what we'll do. I will explain to the insurance company that it's YOUR fault I have such a costly 'record' and that I am costing them so much money. Had you given me the referral in the first place we could have saved ourselves a lot of trouble. Now YOU make the decision...do you want to take responsibility for my PAIN and expense and do you want me calling you every day until I get what I need or do you want to do your job and help me get well as soon as possible?'

POOF! Referral resulted in a bout ohh....half an hour.
If insurance is not a tool for fighting use your health and their JOB as your caregiver.
First and foremost be strong and get what you need. PERIOD>
Sorry but there is no excuse for saying NO to someone in need.
