Birkenstocks and similar shoes

Posted by Anne H on 4/18/02 at 13:52 (080155)

Are Birkenstocks the preferred shoe or are there other brands? When I was purchasing my NB yesterday the store said they carry 'better' shoes than Birkies whatever that means. They had Mesphito and some others from Denmark. Also, for those that wear them, do the buckles on the Birkenstocks irritate the foot? My friend said she bought a pair of Arizonas and could not tolerate them rubbing from the buckle part, is this common? Is anyone familiar with Dr Scholl orginal sandals, made all wood with a piece that buckles down near the toes? are they good? I have a pair of them somewhere. Thanks for the help and I made an appointment with a foot specialist for tomorrow as last night I had pain again but it was below the little toe on the outside joint but then I seem to get fleeting pain in the outside heel area too, I am so depressed because I love walking and I am almost afraid to hear a bad diagnosis, what would i do :(

Mephistos are very expensive, much more so than Birkenstocks. They are very nice shoes and probably good for your feet. I've heard some nice things about them here. I've heard a lot more nice things about Birkenstocks here, and nearly all of us have at least one pair of them.

If it was me, I'd simply drive to the Birkenstock store and tell them that you have foot problems and need someone to fit you very expertly. Then, if the shoes they fit you with don't hurt and seem ok to you, I would buy them. If the buckle on the Arizona bothers you, they can fit you in a Florida, Grenada, or some other style with the classic footbed but without a big buckle, but I seriously doubt this will be a problem for you.

Or, you could get both kinds of shoe, Mephisto and Birkenstock. But I'm assuming that since you just bought New Balance you probably don't want two more pairs this week. If you do have PF, you may end up buying quite a few pairs of shoes in the next few months and it's likely you will end up with a pair of Birkenstock eventually anyway.
