Heel Spurs

Posted by Carole S on 4/28/02 at 20:02 (081518)

Has anyone heard of treating heel spurs with cortisone shots? If so, how many shots or treatments would normally be required?

Hi Carol:

This is routine in heel spur treatment. A regimen of series of three injections over three weeks are normally given. Sometimes they help and sometimes they do not. What type of therpay have you had so far?

The Academy of Orthopedic Foot Society states that you can rupture the plantar fasica with just two local steriod injections. The rate was as high as 9% rupture rate. We have seen this on a fairly regular bases in the past two years. In our practice we try to avoid steriod injections rather then use a series. One final note a rupture of the plantar fascia can lead to major permenant complications such as you see with cutting too much fascia
