3 months Post-Op and questions!

Posted by Carmon S. on 5/01/02 at 23:42 (082087)

Hey gang! I will be three months post-op PF release on May 8 (wow! has it been that long)??? Time flies when you are having fun at physio, massage therapy, and doing your plethora of stretching exercises!!
Anyhow, I will first start off by updating you all on my 7 wk. post-op visit from March 28. I haven't posted in a while. The Doc was pleased and I think almost shocked that I had seen improvement this soon. I was ready to book the surgery for my left foot the day that I saw him.....I was so happy!! He reminded me to take it easy (hence the enthusiasm) and that what he has provided me with is a stepping stone to recovery over a long period of time. Happy overall.

Three months POST - OP.........
I am still on crutches (but have been for 18 months anyway). I am pretty much weight bearing as much as I was or more prior to the surgery. I still don't have the tolerance to stand in one spot for long. I use the wheel chair around the house when I get tired and mostly to save my other foot (which has really flared up worse since the surgery). I am buzzing around in my VW van (ah, FREEDOM)! I will likely have to get an automatic at some point. I have finished 9 sessions of physical therapy and started massage therapy. It's so wonderful to see some progress after seeing next to nothing for so long.

I called today to try for a surgery date in June for the left foot. Hopefully, I will be ready to shift the weight from right to left.

A couple of questions..........
I am still experiencing some mild swelling on the underside of my heel..is this common?? It won't always be there will it?? Secondly, of course, I am dealing with scar tissue and part of my scar has attatched itself to the bone....I would like to hear from others who may be experiencing this too. What else can you do besides deep tissue massage?? It's kind of a catch 22 because all surgery creates scar tissue. However, in my opinion it is the lesser of 2 evils.
Thanks for listening and I will keep ya posted.

Carmon: One of the Docs will need to answer this but I have not heard of anyone still on crutches 3 months after PF surgery? What is the reason for this? Certainly scar tissue will build up even faster with no use of the foot and muscles will atrophy. There must be more to this than you have posted. Good luck--

John, I was initially put on crutches by my physical tharapist in the very beginning of my PF. The reason for this was to create a 2 point gait...take most of the weight on my arms instead of my feet. Well, I am still using them after 18 months. I was diagnosed with severe bilateral PF that is resistant to treatment (prior to my PF release). The crutches are primarily for pain and symptom management and have become a crutch of course. Don't get me wrong.........I do use my feet but I cannot tolerate my full weight at this point. I honestly do not see myself getting off of these until the left foot has been done. My specialist was supportive of my use of the crutches. You do what you have to in order to cope with the pain.
Thanks for your concern.
