heather..... I don't know what sorts of things you have tried. If you haven't tried anything yet, put your foot on a bag of frozen peas or ice pack for a few minutes, and read the heel pain book on this site. Read the message board too. Try to rest your feet, and try some of the treatments suggested in the heel pain book and on the message board.

Hope your feet feel better soon!

Hi Heather,

We know just how you feel. When you get a chance, check out this website: http://www.pain.com
Have you explained to your doctor just how much pain your in? It might be good to make a list for him. Write out what the pain is doing to you, where it hurts, what makes it worse. Are you taking anything for the pain at the moment?

Good luck

Heather, stay off your feet as much as you possibly can, and see a foot specialist: a podiatrist.

I have bad burning pain in my heels upon standing and walking, brings me to tears because I can't explain to anyone the feeling. Is this a weight problem? My doctor couldn't diagnose problem which made me more frustrated.
Any Suggestions please?

Re: in alot of pain!!!!!!!

Sharon W on 5/16/02 at 09:31 (084131)

Heather,

What kind of doctor did you see? If it was your primary care Dr., you need to ask for a referral to a podiatrist. Sometimes burning pain can be related to a nerve problem. I have trouble with burning myself and I know how miserable it can be. There are treatments available that can help. But before your problem can be appropriately treated, you do need a thorough examination by an experienced foot specialist -- a podiatrist.

Tammie on 5/16/02 at 09:35 (084132)

Heather, what a way to meet! I offer a hand in friendship and ask that you take a deep breath and try to relax. You are in alot of pain and you have alot of frustration, not to mention a whole boot of worries! Maybe you might want to start off with getting a nice cupa of what ever soothes you and a bag of frozen veggies and sit down for a nice read! Put the frozen veggies under your foot that is giving you pain.

NowHave you read the heel pain book here yet? Do you see it look to the top of the message board. Try to read and relax. Then when you are feeling up to it can you tell us what is going on with your foot, and have you seen a foot DR.? A pod or a ortho or someone? Next can you please tell us what they did or said to you? Also list what they have tried as treatments? Have you tried different shoes? Have you rested the foot? What type of work do you do? Can you tell us the things that have helped ? What starts the pain when is it relieved? I know this is a ton of questions but the more info the better chance of getting some advice from those of us who have been there and are still there!

This is a good place to start but as we are not the Dr.s or the people here can only give advice and things you might try, but you also need to have a Dr. who can give you a exam and see your feet.To help decide a dx so they can help you with a treatment plan! Please stay with us as we want to help and be here as a back up and to share different things to try that may have or may not have helped us. I hope I have not said anything to upset you or anyone here on the board. But I do feel your emotions and the cry for help! Please relax and read read read. Post with what ever you can as there are good people here to advise and help with all issues! I offer a warm hug to let you know we care!

Nice to see you here Brian, how is the feet? Planning on fishing? Puppy? Get this my dad went out in woods again, lol back to getting his turkey. Ugh my mom says can we just get a frozen one? LOL not the joy of what draws the hunters to the woods tho I would guess! I sure hope he remembers to take his compass as I dont know if I can take another expierance like the last one! LOL Not to keep saying this but my big day is MONDAY 10:00 am I am nervous but excited to begin the search of dealing with all this and truly finding out what I can do as well as what they can do for me ! I hope I have all that I need in order! I am getting anxious! I wish that I would been able to go from a hard day instead of 3 days resting . But guess no difference as things are still there just maybe not the 10+ level that I could fire out my words lol. Sunday I did. But we shall see. Hows it going with the SS stuff? Any word yet? Thinking of you .

Carole C in NOLA on 5/16/02 at 11:51 (084154)

Heather, it might be a good idea to follow Julie's advice and see a podiatrist for a diagnosis. If you have plantar fasciitis (PF) like most of us here do it's probably not a simple weight problem. For example I lost 80 pounds over a year and a half, and THEN got PF. I didn't have PF ever during the years when I was at my heaviest. For me it was an athletic injury. Some people who are very slender get PF, like Wendy who posts here.

Once you get PF, your overweight may slow down the healing, from what I understand. Losing weight is a good idea for many reasons, and it may make it easier on your feet while you heal.

Re: Tammie finally gets some real pain control!

BrianG on 5/16/02 at 22:26 (084242)

It's still a waiting game for me Tammie. I'm trying to be good to my feet, as I want to give them every chance I can to heal. Very little fishing so far, but I will be out this Saturday. You can believe I'll tape my feet well!! I can't even think about a pup right now, so it's OK the bitch came into heat two months late. I'll know more by August, about both my heels, and the pup :*)

Good luck on Monday at the pain clinic. Don't expect too much too soon, as they may want to do some tests. If they do start you on a different pain med, it will probably be a small amount, to make sure you can tolerate it, and they will bring you up to a more efficient pain level as each month goes by. Have some patience, but also don't be afraid to let them know how bad yor hurting. Good luck

Tammie, My visit to my local doctor was a waste of time. I told her my right leg has been so sore for months...a feeling of heat and burning above the knee(I thought the pain may have been varicose veins)but she didn't say anything and then my right heel began to burn and make it difficult to walk without holding on to things. I feel so awkward.. I cannot explain the pain but I know I have to put my feet down to walk, and that's an effort. My husband told me to lose weight and do more work but I tire after a while because of the pain. Sorry to complain but I am not coping with this well. A podiatrist will be my next step thanx to everybodys advice in here. Regarding shoes?.....I have a favourite day pair but quickly find my slippers a help. Resting the foot?....have sometimes wrapped my feet up in a cold, wet towel to elleviate the burning sensation. What starts the pain?.....Standing and walking, tippytoeing on ball of foot is frequent. I know I am not making this pain up in my head, and the leg has got to be associated with the foot problem...like an irritable restless pain only relieved by going to bed and sleeping. Thanks for listening. Heather L.

Oh Heather, I'm so sorry for you! You sound so frustrated and in so much pain! You must see a podiatrist at the earliest possible time and get to the root of your problem. As others have said, weight can be a factor in PF but many of us were slim when we developed the condition. I've gained weight since I got PF but until that time, I had always been quite slim. If you read the Heel Pain Book, you'll see that there really isn't any one, specific cause for PF and effective treatment varies from person to person. While you're waiting for your appointment, why don't you try some of the treatments suggested in the book, like icing, resting and gentle stretching?

You're really not 100, just a youngster of 50 and with treatment, you'll begin to feel that way again!

Good Luck!!

Heather, I am truly sorry about what is happening to you! I wish to let you know we do understand the frustration and the hurt that is put onto you with thease sort of feet troubles!

Did you see a poditrist? I am not swaying one way or another but from my own expierance . I felt that the pods were a bit more intuned to the foot and its problems, I am not saying that a ortho or ortho that is also a foot and ankle spec . would be bad! But I would really see if one could be found and go to both to see what you are told. I know insurance can be a bit of a red tape thing but from where I sit at this moment , I can say it is your feet and it is ONLY you who will have to live with them. So be sure of who you entrust to care for them.

I cant offer to much dx with the burning and pain as I just do not feel comfortable or knowledable with it. But I do understand about family and friends and co workers whocan often be hurtful! Sometimes it is just out of therre frustration of seeing us in pain and wanting t help and not really understanding the pain it entails or how long it can go on! If he would come here and read some maybe it will really show him the reality of this all. Weight is not the MAIN issue, there are many many thin people who have veriable degrees of pain in there feet. So first things are first seeing a Dr. who can give you a dx.Then a good chat or talk with a dr. who may help you with your pain and emotional pain I found paxil with my Dr. it has helped greatly ! I truly know how much emotional pain goes with this foot deal! Read about me if you like do a search on my name! You will see I am feeling much better emotionally then I was a few weeks back not that I dont have times of back slide but I am getting there.

I am under impression from most here that if you have heel or foot pain going with out shoes is a BIG NO NO! Even at night when may get up for bathroom. There are many different shoes who we might think are good for us but really hurt us in the long run! I can tell yo I never bought good shoes lol at least pairs that were 2 and 3 figures lol. I have extreamly flat feet and thought all shoes were jsut fine for me. HA ha joke on me! Look at a search for shoe tips here as there are many!I toe walk also, that is even with 2 foot surgeries, I am now on my way today to a pain management team. I am frightened and I know I did many things wrong with dealing with a foot pain that I thought would go away in a short time! WRONG I WAS! I must go now but remember WE are here for you and we do care! The hand is there for yo reach out and touch it and feel its love passed on to you! Hugs to you Tammie

Thanks Tammie,
I thought I could put the pain out of my mind and it would go away, but I am wearing down emotionally and the pain that is in my leg and my heel is still there. With comments everyday like ......'what's wrong with you today?' and the fact that I am expected to find employment does not help me deal with my situation...only makes me more fearful of getting out there to work. I don't mean to complain but what good am I in the workplace if I'm in pain at home trying to deal with this.
