Complications from stepping on wood

Posted by Karen A. on 6/01/02 at 23:06 (086049)

about 3 months ago I stepped on a 2' pc.of wood(off a wicker basket, looked like a toothpick..had varnish and lacker on it.) emergency room at hospital couldn't get it out, podiatrist refused to come in..no emergency
was in foot 15 hrs. before being removed. 4 wks later received surgery to irregrate it out for the infection, and swolling, I am still in considerable pain, still swollen and still red,(still with crutches) MRI doesn't show anything, yet, I just picked out some small splinters out of it.still swollen, and still red. the dr. is wonderful that I have,(also after removing the stitches it split open, and ulcer appeared and had to be treated with antibodics..oraly about 5 wks total from when it happened) it had to heal from the inside out..took several weeks 9not a diabetic).. now they are trying electro simulation therapy for scar tissue etc. and will do ultersound therapy next week, any suggestions.. what if this doesn't work, should they reopen it up and reflush it out ..could there possibly be some more splinters in there causing the problem.

Hi

There could more foreign body wood splinters in the the wound. There could be a bone infection. There could be a tendon and or muscle that is infected. Has the wound reduced in size to any significant degree. May have to repeat the mri. If is very difficult to give advice without seeing the wound and the progress of he wound. Debridment is important. May need to use a product such as regranex. This is used for ulcers that won't heal.

Karen - just as an aside, are you sure it was a podiatrist they were trying to call in to emergency? Where I live podiatrists don't have hospital privledges, and I can't understand why another doctor couldn't remove it.

yes, it was a podiatrist they called in.. here they call in a specialist. The dr. in the emergeny room tried to pull it out, cut some and couldn't get it out, called the podiatrist as they didn't want to do any damage to the btm. of my foot, nerves, tendons etc.. like I said, he didn't think an open wound-foreign ;body was an emergency and this stayed in my foot for 15 hrs. before being taken out.. results, surgery 4 wks. later for infeciton etc., and I am still on crutches and being treated..

That's awful Karen! I'm amazed that they left it in your foot for so long!
